new graphics load out on a buget!
i am just about to make a transaction for a geforce3 (not ti200 or ti500). currently i have a duron800 with 256 sdr ram @133mhz.
my mobo won't support an athlon xp or ddr - so my friend reckons that i should get an athlon thunderbird and an extra 512mb of sdr rather than a whole new mobo, proc, ram. i am on a budget so i was thinking about the former option rather than the later. what are your thoughts? thanks in advance, tim |

Going to 512 RAM probably isn't going to make a noticeable increase in performance, and exceeding 512 in 98,98SE, or ME will require adjustment of the VCACHE in order for it to work.
Besides the Video Card, going with the T-Bird will allow you to use the 133MHZ RAM that you have. So instead of the extra RAM, use the money to get a faster T-Bird (Don't forget to get a better heatsink and fan unit). |

if i upgrade to windows XP - grab the 512 ram and a 1.2ghz thunder bird, is the performance adequate enough as i heard that ge3's get stuck on like 30fps under a duron.
i am only upgrading the CPU because i don't want that to happen! thanks, tim |

XP or Win2K are going to give you a little better OS performance, but if you are heppy with 98 keep it as the OS isn't really going to increase the performance like the CPU will. Mainly the benifit from the newer OS is faster start-ups, but remember these are big hard drive space hogs over 98/ME. And if your present hard drive is a 5400 RPM, I would suggest a newer 7200 RPM one instead of the OS change-out.
It is only when you exceed 512MB of RAM that you have to adjust VCACHE so 512MB will run fine. The improvements should run fine with the GForce card. |

well, i was thinking about getting windows XP when i upped my graphics card so i would probably get windows xp anyway.
that hard drive that you suggested - if (when) under 98 something starts 'not responding' is that probably due to a) hdd, b) psu or c) the os? i was thinking it was the os more than anything. but correct me if i am wrong! tim |

wait - you said "going with the T-Bird will allow you to use the 133MHZ RAM that you have" i have pc133 sdr - that's what i set it to (host clk + pic clk = 133) i thought that duron was able to do that!
does this mean that i have overclocked my ram or has my mobo (see sig) locked it at 100? oh no! Last edited by wilsontc; 08-18-2002 at 01:10 AM. |

Durons are all 200MHZ Front Side Bus, so you have been overclocking it. Which is probably giving you the problems.
