AGP, extra unused extension

What is the extra extention on the agp slot for? What i'm talking about gets filled with a plastic piece of the vid card instead of the usual "gold fingers".

You remove the plastic filler only if you are using an AGP Pro Video Card, otherwise you leave it in place or risk damage to your video card. As to AGP PRO cards, unless you want to spend more than 1000 bucks stick with the regular AGP cards.

OK, I think your talking about the plastic piece that is allready in the slot. The part i am talking about is on the other end of the slot, and a plastic piece of the vid card goes there.

If you are talking about this, thanks for the info.

On a lot of boards you have a locking device that locks the card into the slot by engaging a little slot on the end of the card.

Yep, just a little lock to hold down the card. Some cards have a tendency to "rock" when you screw them down to the case.

ok, excuse my crude drawing, but are you talking about:

where normal agp cards only have:

edit: sorry, i meant agp cards, not slots.

It's wierd, I don't know if my MB doesn't have that extra space, or my card is just filling it up, but I don't have any extra slot space on the end of my AGP slot. I do have the oh so convenient plastic lock down, though.

That is the AGP Pro extension Morris was talking about. Not all mobos have it. As most of the users don't have the need or the money to put an AGP Pro card on their systems.

The ATI Fire GL 4 is an AGP Pro card. It packs 128 MB. Down here it costs $ 2,263 USD.

It could be how your motherboard differentiates between 3.3v and 5v cards.

And that price is dealer's price, not street price.
