Games that use 64MB + ?

Hi everyone,

As far as I know there are no games that use over 64MB on the video card, and only 1 or two that use 64 MB . Does anyone know of any future games that use more than 64MB?

Doom 3 is supposed to use over 80MB in video memory for textures.

I don't know when it is coming out, but I am sure it will run with only a 64MB video card. You probably just won't get all the eye candy, super high quality image quality and model details and such. I would find it hard to believe that they would release a game that wouldn't run decently on 64MB video cards.

Just this afternoon I found myself wondering if it would take long for vid cards packing 1GB or VRAM to appear.

Heh, I hope they start making smaller memory chips. That much and the card might break :/

Would smaller cheaps mean less or more heat?

IT DOES not matter if the games needs more than 64mb of mem..

I think 64mb oranygf4ti4200 ismore than enough..!

you can always set the amout of pci texture mem to be used..

Doom 3 is supposed to be overkill with requirments, since it needs at least a 1Ghz processor (!?)

If a game requires more than the memory on the card, agp aperture size comes into play. The aperture allow for a set amount of system memory to be used for whatever application requires it. However, this will be slower than video memory. Just ask all those poor souls out there with only onboard video, trying to play unreal tournament.

I started to care about vid cards back in 1998 when I got a Diamond Stealth based on the Virge graphics chip. It packed only 2 MB of RAM but almost everyone down here was using 1MB vcs or 512K ones (you can laugh hard but that is the truth). That card costed me 400 pesos (over 40 bucks).

Later, when I built my PII @ 400 rig, I put in a Diamond Viper V770 non-Ultra, with 16MB. This card is still working in my mom's system. It costed 120 bucks back in 1999.

Now I have a GF3 Ti200 with 64 DDR RAM. It costed me 160 bucks.

What I wanna say is this: a friend of mine kept all the way from 1998 bashing me coz I put too much money on the vid card. He just couldn't understand why couldn't I just go with a 8MB SiS, or keep the old Viper whey I built my Athlon rig.

I always said to him that the vc was the most important component of a gamer's rig, next to the mobo, but he didn't changed his point of view... Until he installed the last Spiderman game and it refused to run due to his TNT2 M64 card!! Now I am the one who is bashing him!

just with the whole ram thing, the newer cards (ge4 ti's etc) use a new type of ram BGA or ball grid array.
this is not only smaller but also runs cooler - i think that in 6 months or so we will see another type of ram that will allow 512mb and above.

Geeze 512MB video RAM? How much RAM will a system need?

I hope they find a better way to cool VGA chips, the heatsinks are already plenty big. I guess they could put the chip on the back of the card so that there is more room for a HSF.

I think a similar question was once asked when computers were using 64k of memory.
I always answer such questions with my own question. How much is too much?

You can't have too much RAM, think of the texture differences between "Doom 1" and "Jedi Knight 2"
