Decision Time--Video Card
Okay, I know I've posted about what video card to buy, etc... But I keep asking myself do I really need the 9700? I only play CS at this time and I'm thinking of better ways to spend $400.00. I just built my system and I'm still using the onboard sound, P4B533. So, I was thinking I could probably pick up a nice 4600 and the SB Audigy for about the same price as the 9700.
I watched a DVD for the first time last night and it was really choppy. I currently have a 32MB TNT, I know it's cheap but it was here when I put the system together. I guess it put a load on the processor because the temps went up to 45 and they've been running at 36. What would you do? If you can recommend a good video card for games and DVD playback would be appreciated. System specs are... 1.8A Asus P4B533 Kingston PC2100 256 Lite on 1C 6X DVD Lite on 48 CDRW WD 80 GB SE (8MB cache) Logitech Z560 |

P4 1.8A can do full software DVD decoding with no problem, so the TNT card shouldn't be the problem.
First check that DMA is enabled for your DVD drive. How's the setup (IDE1, IDE2, master, slave), and what OS are you using ? RJ

If you are buying then you should be fine with the 4600. I assume it has 128MB. You'll want a 128MB vc as stated in this thread.

I think a Ti4600 is overkill for just CS, but if you plan on playing newer games coming out such as UT2003, it would be a good choice. HTH

Actually, something like a Radeon 8500 LE 128MB overclocked to original Radeon 8500 specs will do lovely for CS, and has a fully integrated hardware DVD decoder. Something like that will perform perfectly for CS.
Newegg has a "bulk" Radeon 8500 LE 128MB, with the good type of ram, BGA I think, it will overclock well. It is under the regular "ATI" name, not "Powered by ATI". It is going for like $115 I think. The OEM ATI - Powere by ATI Radeon 8500 LE has TSOP RAM, which isn't as good for overclocking as the BGA RAM on the bulk one. You can tell the difference because BGA RAM is smaller, like a square, and TSOP RAM is larger, like a rectangle.

I would try maybe the 4200 or 4400 Ti, since you say you don't need all the juice. Or a radeon 8500. The 4600 is a lot of money anyways, then you might actually consider getting the 9700.

I bought the MSI 4400 card and it is VERY nice. Definitely worth every penny. the 4600 might be a bit over priced still.
