there are lots of graphics cards that can beat it, but you won't be able to find one that looks like it can, because computer don't have fixed hardware (like the playstation does), so programmers have to program for a wide variety of hardware.

? I have both a computer and a PS2. I think my comp blows it away, maybe the graphics just look better on my monitor. Since I've built my box I spend less time on my PS2(only play Virtua Fighter4). When I go back to use it, seems inferior to me. For instance I'll play red faction and think how it can't compare to Serious Sam 2 and MofHAA. I think when a system comes out it is better than a comp b/c of dedicated specific hware, but the computer industry strikes back quickly. Like when GF4 came out, it put xbox back in the rear.
Emulating is more difficult, don't hold your breath for that PS2 emulator, at least not one that will perform as well. Last edited by Texuspete00; 08-28-2002 at 01:04 PM. |

Computers are 2-3 years ahead of consoles. Hardware wise computers blow away any console. The only reason to get a console is for multiplayer (not counting playing online or a lan) and some games i.e. fighting games translate better on consoles.

No, the real reason to get a console is so that you KNOW that when you spend $50 on a game and get home with it, it WORKS RIGHT THE FIRST TIME you put it in. No patches, updates, hardware incompatibilities, or any of that crap. That is the true advantage consoles have over PC's.

Jenni has a great point there. I have a Gamecube, and I have to admit, Ive been reglecting it. I only have Rogue Leader, which I got with the system for Christmas. I love the system but frankly, I dont have $50 to shell out everyday month for a new game. I can play games online on my PC whenever I want, and it doesnt cost a dime (besides what we pay for internet access of course).
The great thing about online PC gaming is that, you dont have to play the same friends when you want to multiplay. Playing with people all over the world always gives you a different level of skill to play against. I think online console gaming is a joke. Whos going to pay extra to connect with their console. Im not shelling out 50 bucks for a modem and then 10 bucks a month for access. All the great console games are being ported to PC anyways. (Halo ..... 2003....) Just my $.02

i'd pay to game online if it allowed me to do it with my existing isp. it'd be cool to pit yourself against others with the dependability of a console game.

This info does come from the enemy (Xbox vs PS2) but I read a interview with the chief architect at nVIDIA around the time Xbox was coming out and he said the graphics chip in the PS2 is more comparable to a TNT2s architecture then it is to a a GeForce card like the ones in PCs and Xboxs. The TNT2 is quiet a few years old (pre 1998). So basically the PS2 rendering power isnt anywhere near what you would find on the PC, or the Xbox for that matter. The PS2 just uses different techniques to push the hardware further.

I think there is something attractive about having millions of people to play with online, which is why i never looked back on consoles.
Also there are fundamental differences that are just better on PC. Like the keyboard, and mouse. I like those controls better than any on game consoles, and i can also use a bunch of other controls like joysticks and stuff. Say for instance that you had a console that was on a network so you could play online. How are you going to talk to your buddies? you can't type without a keyboard. ANd then companies charging you extra just to be online, on top of paying your ISP is crappy imo. I just feel like I have more freedom when playing on a PC

I've always hated consoles. They are only good for gaming, you can't write reports or edit pics in them.

Responding to KoOk my 4 1/2 year old Pentium II would have the exact same power as a PS2 if it had a DVD player. Plus, X Box is as fast as a 1999 era PC.
