New Monitor
I am wanting to purchase a new monitor and would request some help. I am new at this so bear with me. I now have a 15.9" viewable CRT monitor and want to move up to a 19". I have looked at several and am leaning towards the ViewSonic VG191B LCD Monitor. My problem is, that, i do a lot of flight simulation which requires major fps (40-100). The remainder of my computer usage is a few games, reading the news and surfing. Can anyone give some advise or recommends?

ViewSonic makes excellent monitors, good choice. For the FPS, that mostly depends on your video card. You want to make sure that the refresh rates that the video card gives, are supported by the monitor, which it most likely is.
Check out the information from RJ in this thread http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...ghlight=LCD+RJ Some great information on flat panels. HTH

Don't forget to look at the Samsung 955DF. I own the 753DF, which is pretty much the same thing but only 17". It's a truly great monitor, I love it. And, it is very cheap. I think the 955DF can be picked up on the internet for around $200-230. These monitors are flat screens (not LCD), and have great glare and reflection reduction.

The 955Df is a great monitor for the price! As you might imagine, it's big and heavy but the picture quality is great!
I had one, but let it go when I couldn't pass up an LCD deal at Dell. |

Hi there marlowe and welcome to the PC Mech Forums!
I'd stay away from Samsung. Its customer support and warranties policies are abysmal. ViewSonic makes excellent products. Stay with them.

Hi,
Viewsonic = BAD, at least for TFTs. A friend of mine has the VG191 and it is disappointing when it comes to moving images. Although the VG191 claims to have a response time of only 25ms sometimes it blurs alot. Especially grey on black, you will see a blur of 5cm and more (I'm not kidding). I'm still not quite sure why, but maybe the MVA is to blame, as the VG191 (Viewsonic in general) uses that and the others don t, but again, I'm not sure. You won't be happy with the VG191. Better look for screens by Samsung or EIZO. RJ

I'll echo the support for the Samsung 955DF. It handles some serious graphics and frame rates beautifully.

Also what I wanted to say about the VG191. Even when it does not blur with the 5cm ghosting, I never got the impression sitting in front of a TFT with 25ms response time. In fact, it seemed even slower than mine (50ms).
Other TFTs, i.e. a friend's laptop screen, with even more pixels than the VG191, handled that very well. No blur at all and movement was displayed better than on mine. I think Samsung and EIZO are one of the best. Also good is Philips (my TFT is made by Philips). RJ |

Also, make sure your video card supports an LCD monitor. Some of the cheaper cards leave off the LCD plug-in as a cost saving measure. I have a GeF-3 that only supports CRT and TV out.

O'B: You mean DVI? Most all DVI-capable LCD's can work with either DVI or standard VGA. DVI is better, but VGA is still decent. The cheaper LCD's are VGA-only anyway.
NK has a point - Samsung monitors may look really good and are priced very aggressively, but Samsung *is* the pits for warranty and customer service. IMO the best monitor warranty in the business is KDS, but their CRT monitors are "average". Their LCD's are getting a really good reputation though - and their XF (Xtreme Flat) series CRT's are getting good reviews. |

Hi, CKOZUK and welcome to the PC Mech Forums!
Well, almost everything about good monitors is already said in this thread. What kind of monitor are you looking for? Are you a gamer? What do you look for in a monitor: image quality, space, price? For dat VC I'd go with a Viewsonic flat screen CRT. 19" or 17" if you're short on money. |
