Hi FantasySoul,
If anything, avoid the Radeon 9000, it's ATI version of the "MX" line of cards, it even performs slower than the Radeon 8500. If you want the top of the line, go for the Radeon 9700 Pro, if you want something a lot cheaper but still very fast, look at the Radeon 8500 128MB. I prefer ATI cards so those would be my choices, but for nVidia, the GeForce4 Ti4200/4400 would be the sweet spot. Hope that helps. |

The Radeon 8500 or 8500LE 128MB versions would be faster than the GeForce 3 Ti200/500 cards. A good option would be to get the Radeon 8500LE (30MHz slower than the regular 8500) 128MB and overclock it to higher speeds, so you get great performance for $120 (at MWave.com). The Radeon 8500/LE is comparable to the GeForce4 Ti4200/4400.

It is commonly held that the 8500 has a better image quality than the gf types.

Personally, I feel that the Radeons have a better picture quality overall compared to the GF cards, but at a very moderate expense of speed, although the Radeon 9700 is doing a good job of taking care of that, but at a not so moderate expense to your pocketbook.

The MX series was always a dog. If you're a gamer go for the GeForce Ti 4 series, for all-around performance try the ATI.

Go for the the Radeon, ATI cards are cheaper and just as good as Nvidia cards. It's kind of like Intel vs. AMD.
