where to get directx ,older version...

Where can i download directx that will work on a 486 dx2/66 cpu running win95?I tried directx 8.0 runtime or whatever they call the one for win95 but my cpu doesn't support it.tried looking in microsoft.com and download.com but neither has it...

Hi sam21,

Almost any older game will have in on the install CD. But, more importantly is, how are you going to remove v8 ?? That normally takes a clean reinstall. There were rumors that somebody wrote a little program to remove 8.x, but I haven't seen it. You'll notice there is no "Uninstall" for 8.x.

Even in Add/Remove Programs there is only a "DirectX Transform optional components". Don't know what would happen if you tried to remove those.

I'm not sure if directx is what i need,i just wanna play mp3's on this comp,i won't be playing any graphic-y games on it...The problem now is that when i play a mp3 i just hear the first second of the song and nothing, the mp3 is still playing but i just can't hear it

I don't believe DirectX is your problem. You must have a sound issue somewhere in your system.

I your CPU doesint support DX8 then it wont install. What you want is DX7.

The CPU has absolutely nothing to do with DirectX. You can install DirectX 8.0a on Windows 95, that works. DX8.1 does not work with Windows 95.

sam21, since when do you have that problem ? When did it occur the first time ?

A 486 doesn't have enough horsepower to play MP3's. Believe me, I tried way back when they first came out on a 486DX4/100 with an original 1.x version of Winamp and it sucked the CPU power dry. If it's going to work at all you need a very lean MP3 player and you really have to play with the buffering settings, etc. If you are going to do *anything* with a 486 you have to be very mindful of minimum system requirements for any piece of software you install.

486 dx4 is faster tan the dx2 right?the media player i'm using is wmp 6.4,is this okay?

When I tried to install DX8.0 on a cyrix proccesor it would not allow it. Error msg: proccesor must be intel or compatable.

Yes, the DX4/100 runs at 100 MHz, and I had 64 megs ram in it too. I think you are fighting a losing battle there - MP3's need more decoding power than a poor old 486 can provide.

Found this on a FAQ:

3) Can I listen to them on my 486?

In order hear Mp3s at their best, the minimum system requirement is a 100Mhz 486 DX4. Otherwise you’ll have to give up on things like stereo separation.

Winamp 2.x claims to run on a fast 486 - but a DX2/66 is not really considered "fast". However, it might be your best bet because it has adjustments - WMP 6.4 has no adjustments whatsoever for mp3 playing - it just plays them.

Is that true even if you are using a sound card? Cause that would take away a lot of the burden on the CPU, right?

Sound card has nothing to do with it. Something has to uncompress and decode the MP3 into wav format so the sound card can play it. That's the CPU, under the direction of the MP3 player software.

i downloaded winamp 2.81 lite and ut did play better than wmp,it was playing the song and i could hear it but it was really slow...
what do i tinker with so it'll be more normal?

another question,why are things in my monitor look like it's going berzerk....like the profile,pm.search,and buddy icons are purple right now.The other buttons and banner have some type of purple around it too...weird huh?

Your video problems are either a sick monitor, cable, or video adapter. Try reseating the cable and screwing it down snug, and updating the video drivers. It's been a long time since I used Winamp at all, much less on a low power machine, so I don't remember the settings that would help you the most - but take a look through the preferences and the help files.
