I would go with the 8500 from that group. I read some benchmarks that the 8500 performs better then the 9000Pros. Even the 9000 with the 128megs of memory falls short of the 8500. The 9000 does support DirectX 9 but in raw power the 8500 is superior.

I would also go with the 8500, but I would suggest looking at the "non LE" version as its clock and core speeds are greater than that of the LE version.

catch23: What you are doing is known as thread crapping, which is unwelcome at the Mech. I also believe you owe an apology to lil Jimmie.

I htink Catch23 was just stating that you need to give yourself more options than just ATI. Hence his statement, "... no need to cut yourself short"
Now considering IronZombie already knows he doesn't want a Nvidia card, he should go with the 8500 (non-LE). Good card. I notice that wasn't really an option though (for price reasons I suppose), so picking from your particular list, go with the 128mb 9000.

Yeah but I haven't heard good things about the LE version of the 8500, which is the only 8500 in his/her list. Unless someone knows benchmarks from these cards already, I may look into it and post which has better performance, or better features.

Okay here is a link to AnandTech's test with the Radeon 8500LE(128), 9000pro, GeFroceMX cards, Geforceti cards and a couple others. They are using the UT2003 benchmark to test for results:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1655&p=4 hope it helps.

I dunno, folks - it looks to me like the 8500LE is pretty close to the 8500 in performance, and it spanks the 9000 and the GF4 MX's pretty thoroughly. Of course, the GF4 Ti's are better, but considerably more costly and the original poster was asking for our opinions on ATI cards under $100 in particular. Of those 4, I recommend the 8500LE.

Agreed.
There were a couple spots in that test where the 9000pro bested the 8500LE, but only by a couple frames per second. The rest of the time the 8500LE was way better than the 9000pro. Keep in mind ironzombie, the 8500LE used in that test was a 128 mb card. |

The extra ram shouldn't make any difference in real world performance, unless you are trying to play a state of the art game that actually uses more than 64mb of video ram. None of the cards you listed are really suitable for such a game anyway, you will need a 9700 or a GF4 Ti to play those well.
Also - to keep the field level, note that the 9000 Pro is a more capable card than the Atlantis if I'm not mistaken - isn't that like the difference between the 8500LE and the full 8500? |

I looked at the tests and Im going to stick with the 8500 LE but im going to go with a 128MBLE like in the test instead of a 64MB, I can all ways OC it to make it a little faster. Maybe later I will have the money to upgrade to a GF4

When you buy the 128MB LE, be sure to buy it retail. That is the only way you get BGA RAM chips as opposed to the TSOP RAM chips on the OEM versions. I don't know the specefics, but the BGA RAM chips run cooler and overclock better.
