Nvidia GeForce2, MX400, 64 meg, and FPS stuff...
OK, not the best vid card around...
Driver version 2.1.8.5 I'm just now getting into serious gaming, and find the FPS rate is great at first, but gradually goes down to less than 7 FPS only a few minutes in. Running XP Pro, with 1 gig of RAM, all background stuff is turned off. How can I get back a decent framerate? Even 15 or 20 FPS would be better than the 6 or 7 it's at now. Don't tell me to buy a new vid card, that's not really an option right now, I want to improve what's already here. If ya need more specs, just ask. TIA |

If you're talking about Dungeon Siege, forget it. I never got more that 20 FPS in that game. Most of the time 10 or less. My brother refused to play it at all, called it "Framerate Sieze" and uninstalled it.
And honestly, 6 or 7 FPS in that game is playable. Annoying, but playable. |

Reboot,
I would go with at least a Geforce 3 ti200 (leadtek). This card has pixel shaders unlike the Geforce 2's. For the price its a great card and can handle the new games. I have onboard G2 mx on my nforce and the gforce 2 ultra on my other system blows it away. I used 3d mark to benchmark the two systems. It may be the Pc800 thats helping to beat the Gforce 2 mx. 3d mark 2001 se scores below. Both tests using 800x600 rez. P4 1.5 ghz w/256mb rdram800 and Geforce 2 Ultra ddr >4018< 3D marks Athalon XP 1600 w/256mb 2100ddr and onboard nforce gforce mx >1749< 3D marks |

I think about all you can do is install the latest Detonators and start disabling effects.

Thanks guys, I turned off shadows and stuff, it's slightly better, and yes, Dungeon Siege is the game in question.
cuffs007, thanks, but I think I have all that stuff covered, not that a defrag, nor clearing temp folders has anything to do with framerate. Shutting down unnecessary programs is also covered. Total, including all Windows services in XP, comes to 16, before starting the game, and with 1 gig of RAM, 862 meg free, that's also NOT a problem. GLC, do you have a quick link to the latest Detonators for it? |

reboot, trust me, NOBODY gets good FPS in Dungeon Siege. Check out this thread to see what I mean:

You can get the latest nVidia Detonator drivers here. Not sure which ones are better, the ones listed under GeForce and TNT or Detonator 40s. I get more stability using the Detonator 40 drivers. To get to them, simply click on Graphics Drivers then click on Detonator 40.
Be sure to follow all intstructions, including turning off virus protection during installation and downloading of the drivers. It actually matters this time. Just run the file that you download, it will automatically detect which card you have. Then restart and you should be fine. Hope it helps

Thanks Jenni and Furius92. Points to ponder...
wilsontc, what's the point of having a system and monitor that can do 1280x1024 if you can't use it? |

Yes, I know. And it's a shame too, because Dungeon Siege is really a fun game. I played it all the way through, ignoring the horrible FPS because it was just so much fun to play.

I installed the latest Nvidia drivers, and it's increased considerably, now nothing less than 10fps (with 6 characters).
Going to try the Detonator drivers later today. |

Yeah, but I just can't help it!
![]() 1024x768 helps too, but I'm so used to seeing so much more on the screen. BTW, the Detonator drivers are not as good, so back to the Nvidia's. |

Reboot,
You must be young, handsome and with the eyes of an eagle, to run games at 1024x768 I can't even find the monitor, never mind read the options menu of most games at that sort of resolution. Since the Voodoo days I've been running most games at 800x600 @ 16 bit, and that does me fine. Most nice looking games still look nice at that resolution and colour depth. Plus it gives me the framerates I desire with a G2 MX 64mb. |

I'm not as near as young as I once was (see my bio for more).
I haven't run 640x480 since I had a 1 meg Cirrus Logic video card on a 14" monitor. 1024x768 was my standard for the longest time, and now, with a much larger monitor, 1152x864 is my minimum, although I do have a quick setting for 1024x768 the wife uses (the only res (large fonts) she can see without glasses). Dilly...there are two drivers for my video card, the standard Nvidia ones for my OS, and the Detonator ones. The standard ones work better for me. Last edited by reboot; 10-16-2002 at 11:19 AM. |
