Benchmark?

Does anyone know of a good, free benchmark utility for checking basic system performance, like hard drive data transfer rates, true processor speed, etc? I would like to compare different hardware configurations & optomize my system for video editing and 3D cad software.

System:

AMD Athalon XP 1800
512 MB DDR Ram
Maxtor 7200 rpm 80 gig HD
Maxtor 7200 rpm 60 gig HD
HP 8x CD burner
Benq 56x cdrom
Iomega 100MB Zip
Pinnacle DC10 Video Capture Board
Netgear fast ethernet card

Thanks for the links. I briefly tried SiSoft Sandra & looks pretty informative. I like the tips it gives. I did'nt realize how many benchmark programs were out there! I got some from Northernwinds post as well & will try when I get more time.

Heres more info on PCMark2002
=======================

Altogether, PCMark2002 includes 56 tests (in the Professional version - see below)! There's no need to list all of them. But in general,

PCMark2002 tests the following:
The CPU (Central Processing Unit), both with integer and floating point workloads (6 tests, including JPEG decompression, Zlib compression & decompression, text search, Audio Conversion, 3D Vector Calculation).

The memory subsystem (25 tests, including both L1 and L2 caches, graphics memory, AGP bus and the system memory).

The Hard Disk Drive(s).

The Crunch test (it runs 3 tests simultaneously).

New Microsoft Windows XP GUI (Graphics User Interface) features (12 tests to demonstrate the new 2D functionality of the Windows XP).

Video performance and quality (11 tests, including ASF compression, ASF playback, DVD playback, Line Flicker Test, Feathering Test).

Laptop battery, if PCMark2002 is run on a laptop.

I remember downloading 3DMark 2001SE on dial-up, it's 40MB.

I didn't attempt to download the 2003 version until I got broadband tho, that version is 180MB!

My fav is a comprehensive bench that fits on a floppy (and will clearly tell you when you have hurt perf rather than helped it). It is called pt test by Passmark. Do a search.
