smokin Video Card?

This probably a dumb question, but I am currently preparing to build my first PC.

A)I have a Pentium 4 2.53GHz, 533MHz FSB. I was wondering if a motherboard with a video card included would provide enough power to properly play DVD's on my 16x DVD drive or if I would need a seperate video card?

B)If I do need a seperate video card, what would be the minimum card to support the DVD drive?

Thank You for your time

Hi mdbr2020, welcome to the PC Mech forums!

It depends on what motherboard it is and the video chipset it uses. If it's too weak, a Radeon 7000 (~$45) is plenty for DVD playback.

The onboard video on the Intel 845G/GL chipset boards supports DVD playback quite well. However, it's not a very good video for games. If you don't game and just want to play DVD's, websurf, and do general office work the onboard will suffice. Just make sure the board has an AGP slot so you can add a card later if you need.

I have a question: when you say the onboard video is lousy for games, do you mean all kinds of games? I know they are no good for 3D and FPS, but, can I play strategy games and not too graphic intensive gameswith onboard video?

TIA

I had an old Presario w/a Trident Blade 3D onboard graphics chip, sharing 8MB of RAM with the system memory. With that, along with the AMD K6-2 and 64MB PC-100 SDRAM in the system, I could play Age of Empires II: Age of Kings quite smoothly.

The only reason onboard video is not too good for games is it uses system memory which is a lot slower than dedicated VRAM, and 3d hardware acceleration is poor to nonexistent. I would guess that the 845G/GL video is probably about like using an ATI Rage Pro card.

OK. I asked because one of my clients wants to upgrade his PC but he wants to go with the integrated video the ABit mobo provides. And he wants to play flight sims so he can use the force feedback joystick he bought a couple of years ago.

Flight simulation on integrated video? Yeah, right. Flight simulators are some of the most graphics intensive games out there. He'll definitely need a good card, perhaps look at something like an OEM Radeon 8500LE 128MB? It's about $100 from Newegg and MWave and should provide a good amount of power for that kind of gaming.

That's just what I told him. But he insists he doesn't want to invest in an independent VC. Gee, guess I should just sell him a flight sim and let him play it with his lousy onboard video. Just to see him begging for a true VC.

Then when you sell him a V Card, add on a $15 non-compliance charge to the bill.
