Need Graphics Card
I have been through 3 graphics cards and none of them have worked properly. I have an older machine with only a 501 mhz processor and 190 MB of RAM and a 10 gig HD. I think I need an older card like a GeForce 2, that will just get the job done. I don't need to play DVD's or video edit, just want to play some newer games with good graphics. The last card I tried was a GeForce 4 MX420 and it kept locking up in windows. Anyway have a good suggestion on a card for me to get?

any number of the geforce 3 cards should be enough for you. The problem you had maybe in the power signature of the geforce 4's/ The older video cards required 3.3v to run but the newer cards 1.5v. Most geforce 3's will do very well with 3.3v

Also, it has to be a PCI card, I don't have AGP slots.

I seen a MSI GeForce 3 Ti200 on www.computergeeks.com for 79 bucks-it would be a decent card for the price and would run the games pretty well,if you had a AGP slot.Might want to think about upgrading the board to take advantage of the AGP slot.hth

PNY NVIDIA GF4 MX420 SDR 64M VGA PCI Video Card Retail $89.00
POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 7500LE 64MB DDR PCI CRT+DVI+TV RETAIL $79.00 All the above are available from Newegg.com Not having AGP leaves you with pretty slim pickings |

Yes, I read a review and benchmark of the PNY PCI card (sorry can't remember where) and it should give you a good performance boost for games.
Elsa also marketed a very good PCI G3 card before they went bankrupt. I read a review and benchmark of that card and the performance was almost as good as the AGP version. If you can find that card anywhere online or second-hand, then it may be a good bit cheaper than the PNY one. Elsa made very distinctive, high-quality video cards. Obviously a PCI isn't going to give you the same performance as top-line AGP card but I do think if you keep your resolution and colour depth down to 800x600 @ 16 bit, most current games should be very playable. Whether you can push the resolution up any higher, will tend to depend on the game. HTH Last edited by mike breck; 10-19-2002 at 09:48 AM. |

Get a used P3 friendly motherboard with an AGP slot . slap it in and get a obsolete Radeon (1-2 year obsolete are still kicking in my friends system, plays the new Hitman 2 excellent). You will not get to where you want to go using a PCI slot for video games. Especially 1st person shooter games.
This is off the top of my head, you might want to wait for an experianced reply ;p Last edited by Jade; 10-19-2002 at 06:52 PM. |

Okay, as mike Breck told you...
This should have been a bump but there is another possible solution. I'll post it and keep my fingers off the wrong keys . Butterfingers Last edited by pam123; 10-20-2002 at 06:35 PM. |

What is your power supply ?
I've seen alot of rigs with 175 watts to run a 500MHz chip and a new video card, that may be your problem. Newegg may not have what you need so try mwave.com and then go to pricewatch.com . Always check reseller ratings for reliability. A TNT2 64 32mb card comes in pci and could be what you need. ATI also has a 32mb pci Radeon card that could work and a 32mb GeForce could do it. I've seen them at mwave and newegg. Check out your mobo on tomshardware, it's probably in the "archive" section, and find out what video cards worked with it initially. That will tell you what to use now. AtiTech.com should show you all their pci cards. |

I have a PII board with an AGP slot....however I was never able to get an AGP card to work properly, since I heard the first PII boards on the market weren't entirely AGP compliant.
A couple of weeks ago I bought a Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT 64MB PCI card....paid like $110 CAD which is about $70USD, great price and a good card. I'd definitely look into to getting this card if you're not ready to ugrade your mobo just to get an AGP slot. My 2 cents |

I can't comment on the Radeon, but I noticed the price difference between the 32MB and 64MB here in Canada is like $20...so if you go for ATI, might as well spring for the extra $20. |

The Gforce 4 card im refering to is a PCI card, and another one on that page is a Radeon 7000 with DDR,and there is a Gforce 2 mx400 on that page as well,so there are a few choices to be had,but like the others have been saying, it is best to look around a bit.
As far as the Power supply ,it seems to me to be a bit light...but I have in the past worked on systems that have used supplies of this size and they worked fine,a lot has to do with the quality of the supply, but if it seems like the supply is underpowering your system, that is a remedy that is pretty easy to do.hth |

I just checked, and my power supply is only 115V, so do you think that was the problem with the GeForce 4? Whenever I tried to play a video in windows it would freeze, and it would also just freeze at random, in windows and while playing.

Do you mean 115W? If so, then that would cause a problem with any GeForce card. |
