Anyone suggest games to try?
I havn't really played many games since the old Atari days. I like shoot 'em up games including; space games, gun fighters, racing, etc. I cant stand games like diamond mine and most others found on Pop Cap, and Yahoo!, etc. I have Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Serious Sam but all the keyboard controls are too much, I don't want to invest a month just learning how to control the game. What kind of games should I try with a smaller learning curve, but still get a little thrill and challange out of. Oh, I have a six button Sidewinder game pad that I would rather use over the keyboard. I just can't seem to get it with the keyboard. RTCW is a really cool game but what are there, fifteen different commands to remember?

Well, most of today's games need plenty of keys coz they have plenty of functions. If you want a game you can play using only the arrow keys and the space bar, alt and ctrl keys, then DOOM is just what the doc ordered. I know it's old but you can install jDoom to take advantage of real 3D.
Strategy games are controlled mostly by the mouse, but I don't know if you like those.

Stategy games may be alright, but I really like games based on the old Galaga, etc. I have a version of Space Invaders that isnt anything special but for a month or two it was at least fast pased and entertaining. I really dont know what is out there. I have found several demos that werent too bad except you get maybe one level at 300x300 resolution. Ive heard of Doom but never played it. If its older, can it be found for download anywhere?

how about some racing games?
I always like the Need For Speed series, and you could use your game pad with them. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit is cool becasue its focus is on out running the cops, or you could be the cop and chase the baddies. Its wicked fun. |

Ah, come on. RTCW isn't that hard to control. You've got forward, back, left, right, (WSAD keys) then the mouse to look around. Button 1 shoots, button 2 jumps (well that's how I have it), then you have crouch and open door on the keyboard. The wheel on the mouse switches weapons. T talks, Y talks to team. If you think about it, that's not very much to remember, and after maybe a half hour of playing you won't even be thinking about where anything is. And if you don't like the default controls, you can change them all to something you like and can remember. That's what I do.

Right now I’m playing Earth Empire… I’m not into games but this game is very addictive. I was telling my wife that the devil made this game because I don’t do anything else besides play this game. I don’t eat or sleep. I need to toss it in the trash but I just can’t. It’s easy; all you need is the mouse and the keyboard. (I never use the keyboard) Its like Age of Empires but better… But I think the graphics are better on AOE.

DOOM is still not free. But in the id Software web site there should be a shareware version of it.
www.idsoftware.com Also, check mike breck's guide to jDoom. It works with all versions of DOOM, including the shareware releases. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?threadid=22178 HTH |

I've also still got my sidewinder and Colin McRae Rally and Fifa '99, 2000 soccer works great with this gamepad. The Need for Speed Series are all good! If your PC is up to it, then Colin McRae Rally 2 is excellent challenge. Happy Gaming. Gilo

I'm totally hooked on Dungeon Siege. There's a great demo you can download, and it really doesn't require any keys at all, you can do everything with the mouse, although you'll find a couple of keys with your left hand does simplify things.
When you get bored with the layout, you can download any number of others. Offers multiplayer via the MS game site, via LAN, or via internet with your friends. (makes a great LAN party game!) |

Renegadeking, Im sure you don't have any trouble controlling these games, but I grew up with PacMan, Asteroids, and other !st generation video games. I havn't even played any type of game in fifteen years. (Im giving away my age) anyway, I dont have the time to invest in gaming. Just looking for a little fun a couple hours a week. If its too hard, Ill just put it down and pick up the remote control. Thanks for all the ideas Guys- I think Ill try the NASCAR games. Oh, by the way....GO TONY STEWART!!!!

Mostly I use the mouse and keyboard for FPS. However, sometimes when I'm tired, I lean back in my easy chair, put my feet up, and use my Sidewinder. However, the downside of using the sidewinder is it's much slower than a mouse and is not compatible or "ideal" for many FPS or TPS (third-person). Once you find a mouse and keyboard setup that suits you, you will find that your reaction time and accuracy will improve considerably. Remember, for the majority of FPS, the most important keys, and the only ones you really "need" to have "under your fingertips" for actual combat are: Fire (usually Mouse 1) Alternative Fire (usually Mouse 2) Next Weapon Forward Forward, Back Side-Step Left Side-Step Right Jump Duck Reload (only if the game requires you to manual reload) Use If you can keep the above keys close together, under your fingertips, then you can perform well in any FP or TPS. All the "rest" of the keys, such as inventory back and foward, can be anywhere on the keyboard to suit yourself. See this interesting thread for how some of the members setup the mouse and keyboard for maximum effect. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...rols+for+games HTH |

Ah, simplicity.
I'm still amazed by The Longest Journey. My favorite FPS is No One Lives For Ever. I picked the right time to become a beginning gamer. Both are simple as controls go, you only need the mouse for TLJ, and NOLF has basic FPS controls that even this beginner could manage after a 10 minute lesson. |

Weird, what I hate about NOLF is the limited key options.

If you're experienced it's limited, granted.
But if you're just starting out the limits are lifesavers. You already have enough to keep track of and a good story and good voice acting can keep you going to the end. NOLF was great! |

A great game indeed. I'm looking forward for NOLF2.
Gee, I liked more Cate Archer than Lara Croft.
