Hi Parker001,

Welcome to PC Mech.

Can you provide more information about your computer. What operating system are you using? Is it a home built computer or a store bought name brand PC? Can you list the parts used in it (if you know)? What kind of background programs do you have running on your system?

Does the screen freeze after you've been playing for a while or right when you start the game? I'm thinking possibly a heat issue?

Is it a total freeze of the whole system or just the game freezes and your able to shut it down and continue using the computer?

And your sure you have the latest of everything? Latest video card drivers, DirectX drivers, and have checked for and downloaded any patches for the games in question?

The original GeForce 256 is a very hot running card. Pull it and thoroughly clean out the chipset fan and heatsink, reinstall, check for proper fan operation.

Hi Parker001,

Do you Ctrl+Alt+Del and "Endtask" all background programs apart from Explorer and Systray, before you play games - including closing McAfee?

McAfee itself, is well known for causing crashes and other weird problems. It does not have a good reputation on these forums.

Does your PC crash in anything else apart from games?

A frozen screen can be due to the sound card. What sound card are you using? and what motherboard chipset?- because there have been issues with some chipsets and certain sound cards.

Yep, that's all you should running in the background on Win98 before running games.

However, as I've said you may not be able to "Endtask" the Anti-Virus directly software. I know with Norton, you have to disable in the Systray (little box on the Taskbar, bottom right of your Desktop) and then Endtask it. Or just change the option in McAfee so the real-time scanning doesn't start when Windows starts.

After you've finished gaming, you can re-enable this again so you are protected once more for emails and browsing.

If reducing the background applications doesn't solve the problem, then we start looking at other things.

You better give us details of the components in your PC.

I had a similar problem once and it was dust in the heat sink of prossesor that was causing it to over heat and freeze whole pc. Now this only happened to me when i was playing games pc worked fine all other times. Let me know if this was your problem.
