AGP 4x has a different voltage than AGP 1x and 2x. Perhaps the 2x will run in a 1x slot but not a 4x.

How do you know if you AGP slot is the one voltage or the other, is it backwards compatible, forwards? There is only two fundamental forms for AGP with the voltage being the only difference, right?

There are "universal" AGP4x cards that will run on either voltage.

If you have an AGP1x slot, it's 3.3 volts.

Thanks for the quick response glc. What is the new standard voltage? What about AGP2x?

AGP 2x = 3.3V
AGP 4X = 1.5V

Some 4x cards are retrocompatible via jumpers like the Diamond Viper V770.

I don't think its the AGP *speed* that's voltage sensitive - it's the *spec* - AGP 1.0 vs. AGP 2.0 vs. AGP 3.0.

Older cards should work in newer boards, but newer cards most likely won't work in older boards, as they would recieve way too much voltage. Actually, I don't even think AGP 2.0 cards will physically fit in a board that only takes AGP 1.0 cards. I'm not positive though.
