Is the G4 the most powerful Mac for grapics & film?

I'm not quite sure if this is would fit under the graphics forum, but whatever...

A friend of mine is deep into graphic designing and filming. He wants to go Mac. Right now, the G4 seems to be the most powerful. He's looking for something more powerful than a G4. The question is: is there a G5 machine?

G4 is the latest model. Its power can be scaled, however, if you wish to spend more money on it.

I think I heard something about what could be considered the G5 coming out pretty soon, so it may be worth his while to wait, if not for the "G5" then for the G4 prices to go down when it is released.

G4's can have dual processors- for instance from the Apple.com site:

Dual 1.25GHz PowerPC G4
256K L2 cache
& 2MB L3 cache/processor
167MHz System Bus
2.0GB PC2700 DDR SDRAM
120GB Ultra ATA drive
SuperDrive & Combo drive
NVIDIA GeForce4 Titanium
56K internal modem

Problem though- its only $5,000 lol.

Heh, my highschool is totally screwed up. In the computer lab we have brand new Dells, with Geforce 2 GTS cards, so people can do word processing and such. In the CAD and architecture room, and the digital electronics room we use 2 year old PIII Dells with an nVidia TNT2 16MB card. So I guess word processing needs those P4s and Geforce 2s, while CAD will run fine on 800MHz PIIIs and TNT2s. Just seems mixed up to me.

Wow that's totally off topic :P

My uncle, who does computer graphics and illustration, says that the dual G4 computers are excellent for the job. Although they are incredibly expensive, the Macs just work really well for the job if they use dual G4s. Don't let the CPU speed on the G4s compared to P4s or Athlon XPs confuse you, that 1.25GHz is very powerful.

So there's nothing really above a G4 at a somewhat reasonable price.

Don't jump to conclusions on G4's. The new G4 desktops are very powerful machines. If he wants graphics and film, tell him to get a MAC. I don't know why everyone hates them so much, they're not bad computers.

Yes, he wants a Mac for graphics and film. Otherwise, he would be using a PC.

Go with one of the dualies with a professional grade video card like nvidia's quadro. If he has the money for a mac, he can probably afford the pro video cards. One of our members was selling a quality card with a lot of power in the for sale forum, but I can't remember who it was.
