DVD output problem
Hi Folks - I 'built my own' for the first time a while back and I can't get any video output from my DVD. The setup is an Intel P4 1.7 GHz processor with 512 Megs of Ram, an ATI Radeon 64 MB DDR video card, SoundBlaster audio card and Hitachi GD-5000 DVD drive. All components were new except the SoundBlaster and the Hitachi DVD drive, which were taken from my older DELL Pentium 3. The DVD drive worked fine in the original DELL unit, but not now. Now, when I insert a disc I get this error message: "Cannot find file PROGRAM.EXE needed for opening files of type "DVD". Some research on the internet tells me that this is a Windows generic error code which means that the file type in question (DVD) is not associated with a program to launch it. So I tried going to My Computer > View > Folder Options > File Types and entering a 'New Type' for .vob file extensions (the files on a DVD disc), but it told me they were already associated with my DVD software. The DVD audio will play, but no video, and the drive functions properly with CDs. I've tried deleting and reinstalling the ATI software. I've also tried ATI's website, but as you might imagine that's an endless loop of frustration. Any ideas? Thanks.

You need software able to play the DVD.
There should be player software on the ATI driver CD. |

Yes, I have the ATI installation disc, and it installed a "Multimedia Center" which includes a DVD player. But that's where the problem arises. The DVD player will launch, but it will not play a DVD. It will play the audio portion, but no video.

You might want to try installing WinDVD... a very good quality viewer. Or possibly even PowerDVD. Both offer a shareware version which must be registered eventually... but you could try them out and see if you are interested in buying them. Both are well worth your money.
I'll also copy this thread to General Software. Maybe it will get a few more hits there. HTH Pat

I second the WinDVD. It's a great player and I haven't had any troubles so far. Also, did you update the graphics card drivers?
