Half-Life Mouse Conundrum
I'm running Half-Life (Day of Defeat) on a 550 MHz machine and I'm seeing something wierd with the mouse response. The physical movement of the mouse and the in-game response are delayed by a noticable fraction of a second. It's tough to shoot stuff. It's running Win 98, a serial port mouse, and an older NVidia Riva TNT graphics card. From what I can tell, everything else seems to work just fine. Anyone have any similar problems or some advice on how to diagnose this? Thanks!

Hi Guinness,
If your mouse is working pefectly well in another programs, then it sounds like the classic lag/ping problem and possibly the FPS available from your graphics card. If you are have a slow dial-up ISP, thats one of things you're going to have to live with. However, there are various tweaks you can try to reduce the ping http://server24.hypermart.net/steve1...L_optimise.htm I'm sure some of the other members can suggest more. You might also try upgrading your graphics card to increase the FPS available. What resolution are you running at? Lowering the resolution to 640x480 x High Color 16 bit may also help. If you have a PS/2 mouse connector, then you should consider using a PS/2 mouse. HTH |

It's not a lag thing. Even if I play just Half-life single player, I get the delay. I have "mouse-smoothing" off in the options menu and I can't seem to find anthing else in the options menu that helps. I'm using a Ps/2 mouse now and I'm still seeing the same problem. I recently upgraded my video drivers and I still see the delay at minimum resolution. I'll run some tests to see if increased resolution exacerbates the problem or what.

Do you Endtask all programs apart from Explorer and Systray before gaming?
Half-life was originally designed to run optimally under a resolution of 640x480x 16-Bit High Color. Try dropping the resolution and color depth. You could also try running in Software or OpenGL and seeing how that affects it. HTH |

If you have mosue acceleration turned on in your mouse properties try urning it off. Also see if turning v-sync on or off helps. If you are using a PS2 mouse, try upping its sample rate in Device Manager.

Well, we figured it out. I switched from Direct3d to OpenGl and it went away immediately. Interesting. Does anyone know why this would have such a strang effect on my mouse input, and how I might avoid similar problems in the future?
And thanks for all your input guys! Now my roommate and I can actually have a fair game of Day of Defeat! Guinness |

Among other things, Direct3D sucks compared to OpenGL.

That's not really true.
But the Half_Life engine is built off of the Quake engine, which was built from the ground up to take advantage of OpenGL. So in this case Direct3D sucks, but both API's are good if porperly taken advantage of by a game. OpenGL sucks for UT2003, for example. |
