KEEP IN MIND ITS A BETA
DirectX for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP 9.0 RC 0 Public Beta Author: Microsoft Corporation Program Type: Freeware Download Now! File Description: *Open ZIP Files! Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX 9.0 includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs. Note: This is a release candidate of DirectX 9.0 and is unsupported. It is important to understand that the beta release of any product will not necessarily display the stability of a released Microsoft product. You may encounter problems, which could possibly result in a loss or destruction of data. Beta releases are not typically appropriate for production use. To submit bugs, click here. This pre-release version expires on March 19, 2003. Users must install a final version of DirectX 9.0 prior to that date to ensure continued proper operation of their system. http://fileforum.betanews.com/dlmain...dxwebsetup.exe

No you misunderstood. Certain cards can only take advantage of DirectX 8.xx. Others only 7.xx The Radeon 9700/9700Pro is the only card currently on the market that is compatible with DirectX 9.xx You can still use DX 9.xx if you don't have a card or game that uses it, but it won't matter.
All cards currently support both OpenGL and some level of Direct3d. If you can find a Voodoo card, they also support the proprietary Glide API, but games are no longer being made for Glide ever since 3dfx got bought out by Nvidia, howe4ver Nvidia may be bringing it back. Nvidia should have a new card on the market somewhere around Christmas time that will be fully DirectX 9 compatible, and "should" outperform the 9700Pro |
