No you are not required to download. It is advised to keep somewhat up to date on DX, expecially if you are a gamer though.

What version are you running? What card do you use? What games do you play?

If you have graphical problems: get it.
Otherwise, do not fix what is not broken.
Unless, of course, you like that sort of stuff.

If you are a gamer: If a game requires it, chances are, it will be on the CD.

Otherwise, pull a modem all-nighter. :)

Respectfully,

Demosthenes

DX 8.1, Gainward GeForce4 Ti 4600. None of the games I play require DX 8.2, I'll just wait until I need it.

are you joking me that you have 28k dialup? I'm not that gullible, but I know a few people who still use 28k...
<-- not a total moron.

It's a 56k USR modem, but I can only connect at 28.8 or 31.2 bps.

I'd gladly trade my gig of RAM for a high-speed connection, but I live in 'The Rural Area That Technology Forgot'.

Satellite... I tried that junk and I never could get it installed. Before I bought it they said it was available in Mexico and what do you know, all the numbers they gave me were out of service… So I tried to connect it and no luck… its just a roof ornament on the top of my house… technical support sucks… It was a DirectPC. Waste of 120 bucks…

We have DirecTV, so I may look into the satellite. You need dial-up for upstream transmission, but who cares?

They have 2-way satellite available, but the upload speeds are still not much better than dialup. Forget gaming over satellite - it just aint gonna work, the lag is awful. Download speeds are only around 200k unless you use their proxy.

Hey, right now I'm at 28.8 Kbps, so 200Kbps is wayyyy faster. I know that gaming won't work, satellite has high latency, but I don't care about that anyway. I may have to go satellite, my Mom sees the phone bill and goes through the roof.

Hey Doobie, why not try Prodigy Infinitum? It's DSL and I think it's available in your area.

How much better is 8.2 than 8.1?

I'm no longer in Toluca... I'm in Zitácuaro now (about 1.5 hours away) ... The only thing that they have here is Prodigy Dial Up... or other small ISP's...

for those who like to live on the wild side and download Betas... DirectX 9 has been released

I repeat BETA... So if you dont know what your doing do not download...

DirectX for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP 9.0 RC 0 Public Beta

Author: Microsoft Corporation
Program Type: Freeware

Download Now!
File Description: *Open ZIP Files!

Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX 9.0 includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs.

Note: This is a release candidate of DirectX 9.0 and is unsupported. It is important to understand that the beta release of any product will not necessarily display the stability of a released Microsoft product. You may encounter problems, which could possibly result in a loss or destruction of data. Beta releases are not typically appropriate for production use. To submit bugs, click here.

This pre-release version expires on March 19, 2003. Users must install a final version of DirectX 9.0 prior to that date to ensure continued proper operation of their system.

That's a little too harsh for me. I doubt they can even guarantee that a final version will even be out by that time. Then you are screwed since DX can't be uninstalled (well, easily anyway). That is, unless you want to do a fesh WIndows install.
