Red face Recommend Games

I like to play a few computer games here and there and I wanted to know if getting Doom was a good deal. I did play it years ago but now I have my new PC and can finally play. My PC isn't a gamers dream. It works fine and in a few hours I'm going to install Radeon 64 MB video card. So other than Doom can anyone recommend a game like that??

If you're into the old school games like Doom, you might try to find a copy of Quake 2. It has much better graphics than Doom and can be found for less than $10 on many stores' "bargain" shelves.

Also... Unreal is a VERY awesome Doom-type game. It would run very well on that video card.

You didn't post your computer specifications so I'm not sure what your system can handle. Post your specs (Processor, amount of memory, hard drive, motherboard, sound card, etc) and let's go from there!

For FPS games, I recommend Unreal Tournament. The original will run beautifully on a lower end system and can be found very cheap. Unreal Tournament 2003 will run with your 64meg card very well. The 32meg card I have runs it perfectly well.

You can also look at the Halflife series. Once you purchase HL, you can download dozens of excellent mods, to play for a long time.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein, No One Lives Forever (1 or 2) are other excellent shooters.

Unreal Tournament is a very good game that you can get for about $10

UT2003 is out but its $50, and you need a pretty good system to run it smoothly.

These are sorta like advanced versions of DOOM.

Now DOOM 3 is a different story.

Well I like to play Return to Castle Wolfenstein, No One Lives Forever (1 or 2). My system specs are:

400 megahertz Intel Celeron
96MB Memory
40GB HD
MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-6199 (VT693) 1.X
C-Media PCI Audio Legacy Device

Hopefully it will play the games I want. I also am planning to put 512MB memory also next week hopefully.

With only a 400MHz system, you'd have to run Unreal Tournament at very low resolution to get a playable framerate. Also... it's not exactly the same as Doom or No One lives forever. It's more a fast paced (Every Man for Himself) Frag Fest. If you're into a level based game where you're trying to reach a specific point to get to another level, Unreal, Quake 2, and Half-Life would more than fit the bill.

You might check on upgrading that processor and adding some memory. You gain substantial system performance by swapping that Celeron 400 with a Pentium 3 900. You'd have to get a slot 1 to FCPGA converter card, but it would be well worth your while. You might even ask for one in the For Sale forum here. Never know... someone might have something to fit the bill.

Also... I'd try and go with at least 256Mb of memory to get alot better performance. Just changing these two components will greatly enhance your ability to play more recently released game titles! Hope this helps!

THE HORROR! THE HORROR!

I've had 3 computers and there all dated or don't work on new games! I asked around to see if I can install a better processor but they said I would have to change the motherboard,etc...

I don't want to do this becuase I just got this PC and i am upgrading tommorow to the Radeon 64MB video card. I can't do the memoery right now becuase lack of change but I plan to once its in my budget.

I was looking at Unreal Tournament and I used to play it alot and it was very cool especially killing the others online. I would like to play that game on my PC but I need more memory which I will add in the next 2 weeks or so. I also didn't really like Qauke, I used to own it.

I don't know what this is:
slot 1 to FCPGA converter card

So all I need is the memory and CPU to play new games?

No offense, but you said you "just got" this PC.......WHY are you buying a 400 MHz PC when today's "entry level" is somewhere around 1.8 GHz?

RTCW, CS, UT2k3, Medal of Honor: Allied Assaults, Max Payne? If you want sports, I highly recommend Madden 2003. You will drool in it's purest form.

I second Fuze's recommendations. I also want to point out Counter-Strike (CS) which he also stated. Its a Great Mod to Half Life. I'm addicted to it. Some ppl really love it, like i do. Some ppl don't care for it, like the weirdos they are! lol.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault is an excellent game. And soon they will have an expansion pack for it called Spearhead.

Medal Of Honor is awesome. If my PC allows it, I can't wait to play the new MOH soon.

I like JKII, myself. Better storyline and graphics. Guess I'm just a Star Wars geek.

JKII. It's great if you're a Star Wars fan. It's got very good graphics and awsome explosions. The learning curve isn't too bad either.

Thief 1 is also good. Not as good as the sequel but you should play it before Thief 2 so you can enjoy it more.

Am I the only one who liked Vampire: The Masquerade? I know, I know... chick game... But like the Unreal prophet I am, I have to second, third, tenth the suggestion for you to try Unreal and Unreal Tournament. Two very different games... the first is storyline based and just absolutely excellent. The second is more frag and run but the graphics are clean and the gameplay sweeeet and smooth. No real storyline accompanying it... well, there is but it's rather scimpy... but it's Unreal. Nuff said. Half Life is a lot of fun. That game was all about pulling you into the story. That's why everyone gave it an 11 out of 10 on the ratings when it came out. Personally, I didn't like the graphics that much but it was still fun. You can run those on your system as long as you run a clean system. I still run those on my 350 and they run with no problem at all. Since my 350 is my baby, I run on that far more often than I do on my 1G. Have fun!

I know people will look at me funny, but I never liked UT.

To me the story is one of the most important part of a game. If I'm killing things I wanna know why!

Unreal Tournament isn't good to me. I get bored very fast. But the new one should be very good and the best is playing against someone else.

Oh yeah. When you play against a human opponent then it's indeed funny. I got bored because I'm a stand alone gamer. No cable or DSL, and these games aren't enjoyable with dial-up. Sometimes you can't even log on.

I liked Deus Ex, and Red Faction. Red Faction is excellent. I have a Radeon 64 meg ddr card, and I didn't have any problem running it.

Don't feel bad. I had Age of Empires 1 and 2, and I used to play a lot over the net, and I hate to tell how many times I got swabbed. I think I won 10 out of a 100 games. I played over probably 500 games. And I won very little

As for playing it on the net, all I can say is that it's amazing what other players can do in less then 10 minutes...
