Video card problems
I've got the Asus version of the Geforce4 Ti4200. The card ran flawless last week while I was running it on 98se. After installing xp pro, I got the xp driver off Nvidia's site, and then attempted to run F1 2002. When I was running it last week before the OS change, I ran the game and never had to mess with any card settings whatsoever and it looked stunning. Now I go run the game and the frame rate is slow and everything is just plain ugly and jagged-edged. Ok, so I go to the game's 3dconfig and turn on anti-aliasing. When 3dconfig does its anlayzing I get a fatal error message that Windows is shutting down to prevent further damage and to check with the company the hardware camefrom, along with a few other things I didn't catch. I only get this message when trying to use anti-aliasing. What I can't figure out is why the game and others ran perfect last week right off the bat and now they are just plain hideous. I didn't have to turn on anti-aliasing or any of the other advanced settings in the games before. The driver for xp on Nvidia's site doesn't have a card manager, whereas the driver on the cd does....but it appears there isn't much to adjust within it except resolution and refresh rate.

I went back to that error message and it said something about dumping physical memory.

Try to System Restore back to before you got the error. Then, before installing new video card drivers, un-install the current build. Reboot and install the new drivers.

You may also have to look around and try a better XP compatible driver for your video card.

The XP drivers on nVidia's site will do fine. Just don't screw up and try to install a different OS-compatible driver.

I got the xp driver off Nvidia's site...and all the games looked like crap. Tried the one on the cd...which I'm guessing is for 98/NT/2000 which gave the same result.

You should reinstall DX after each time you install video drivers.
What does DXDiag say about your drivers? Does it pass the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests? Check with the game's publishers Web Site to see if this is an issue and if there is a patch. HTH |

I talked to Asus today and they had me delete the driver I got from Nvidia's site and install one off their site. It improved from where I was drastically, but it still isn't what it was back with 98se. Before, the games were stunning and ran smooth as silk....now they are less than stellar and run quite slow fps-wise. I've been told that xp is definitely not for gaming and if I wanted to do strictly that, to go back to 98. I don't see how a different OS could suck all the power out of my video card...maybe others can shed some light on that. I've got a control panel for the card where I can adjust resolution, refresh rate, line interweaving etc...would some of this get it back to the performance it had before? I'd rather not go back to 98se...don't much like the idea of running outdated stuff on a brand new system.

Are you using FAT32 or NTFS?

Well, with NTFS frame rates are slower than in W98. I've also found some games to be slightly slower in general in XP.

When you get a blue screen that says dump physical memory..that means your RAM could be bad..try putting in another stick of RAM and see if that helps..Take out the maybe defective one..

The driver fixed the problem of dumping physical memory. I now have full screen 4x anti-aliasing on the game, which is what's dragging it down I'd imagine. I never even had to turn that option on when it was on 98,

God, I can't run AA at all with my Ti 4600. That would slow down any system......

I'm having to use AA to keep games from looking like they are on an Atari. I've got awful graphics, nothing is clear (lines etc), and frame rate is slow....and this is all without any other cars on the track with me. I ran a test in 3dmark at 1024x768x32 at low detail and no AA and scored 7777, which compared to others similar to mine,it appears I have quite a problem somewhere. It's got me to the point of selling the thing or pulling it back apart as it's all still within the 30 day guaruntee....bought it for gaming and it won't do it.
