which video card for christmas

I am going to ask for a agp card for christmas and I need help choosing which one to ask for. I would like to keep the price around $80-$100. Im thinking one with 64megs of ddr memory.

I dont do a whole lot of gaming, yet, but I hope to in the future. This card will be for a future build, I hope to have a 2.4 P4, 512 megs ddr ram, and a sound blaster live! 5.1 card in the new build.

A GeForce4 Ti 4200 seems to fit the bill, especially if you plan to do any gaming. Although they are a little bit more then $100, they can be had for around $120.

Both newegg and mwave still have Radeon 8500s left and they'll fit your budget as will the 9000pro.
The Geforce4 Ti4200 is presently outside your budget but I've been seeing them for $120 and with the arrival of the 9500pro that price will drop so you might want to keep an eye on them, you might find one in your price range by mid-Dec.

Talking

Assumes pose of quiet dignity before speaking : Some of us are not swayed by the majority in their careless rush to NVidiotdom.
We recognize true value when we see it.
In this case we recognize ATI.

Before you get into heavy gaming, what do you plan on doing most with your pc?

I use my machines for mainly surfing the internet and programming. I usually have three or four webbrowsers up at any time as well as a terminal or maybe visual studio. Oh, and I just bought a tv tuner card, i would like to actually be able to watch tv and have the sound match the actors voices, while doing all of the aforementioned activities of course .

thanks for all of the replies so far, I really appreciate the input. Im also keeping an eye on BassMasters thread on the saphire card, saw that one today and wondered the same thing.

isuace,
Then the ATI card will suit your needs much better. It is still a decent gamer but also renders display and color better.
For all out gaming, then AWD's recommendation is the way to go.

What you want out of a christmas present is no headaches. I suggest nvidia, because ati cards have well known driver issues. Ofcourse, you can download the newest drivers, in hopes that they work.

If you are building a dedicated gamer, definitely go Nvidia, the hottest one you can afford. For a general purpose machine that needs to be game *capable*, the hottest ATI you can afford is the best choice. I like em both, but ATI has a better 2D display and truer color matching. There are tradeoffs both ways - Nvidia's weak area is color and ATI's is frame rates.

Yes, go with the 128MB version. Although it's clocked slightly slower then the 64MB version, that is easily remedied.
