Old computer that needs some upgrading.

I have a 750 mHz AMD duron computer. I was wondering what kind of video card would go with it well?

Right now it has 128 ram, is it possible to add another 512 mb ram?

That won't do. You'll have to at least try to find the model to get help with your question. Look on the motherboard next to the last PCI slot. Many MSI mainboards have the model number printed there.

It's a MSI K7T Pro MS-6330 VIA KT133 motherboard or W6330MS.

That board will support up to 1.5 gigs of PC133 SDRAM (A 512MB Stick of six layer RAM is less that 40 bucks)
THe board will support upto an XP2000 CPU with the BIOS Update.
The borad will support the latest video cards, although you will need the Newest BIOS update.

Whoa. Didn't know that. Only PC133 ram? It can't be DDR or something? 512 mb ram in canada is like $200.

Where can I update the bios? Thanks.

www.msicomputer.com for bios updates.

DDR won't fit. From www.ncix.com/canada :

INFINEON512SD32X8
INFINEON PC133 512MB SDRAM 168PIN OEM CAS3
Yes
$89

What video card would you prefer for a 750 mhz computer for gaming?

Hi Xion,

I would upgrade the processor first, an Athlon XP 1600+ is only $49 here in the US. A good gaming card then would be the Radeon 8500LE or a GeForce4 Ti4200.

Cool. Now I'm thinking of adding a new motherboard, processor, ram, and video card. It would probably add up to $600 CDN. Would you suggust buying a new computer instead?

It depends, you can do some decent gaming with your current motherboard, 128MB more RAM, an Athlon XP, and a new video card and it should last you for a while longer. If you're looking to play all the newest games though (Doom 3, etc.), you should go for a new motherboard with DDR support.

Great. Thanks. What is the best motherboard currently from MSI that would support future addons?

The MSI KT4 Ultra is their newest board, supports 333MHz FSB, DDR400, and USB 2.0.

Thanks. Kind of stupid question but does graphics really make a difference? Right now I have a nvidia tnt2 32 mb video card but was wondering if the radeon 8500 le would make a big difference in terms of quality and smoothness?

Yes, it would make a huge difference and, imo, it will improve your game playing experience quite a bit. I love my games even more w/ my GF4.

Geforce 4 Tis arent nearly as pricy as they used to be. The best bang for the buck is definetly the Geforce 4 Ti4200. I recommend Gainward. They have the best overclocking abilities, even though Geforce 4s are plenty fast. Other great brands are MSI, Asus, Leadtek, Evga. Heres a link to Gainwards at Newegg.

The "GAINWARD/CARDEXPERT GeForce 4 Ti 4200, 4ns, 128MB DDR, Power Pack Golden Sample" on this page is only $165 with free shipping. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...tby=14&order=1

I think you can get 64mb models for as low as $117 - or even lower if you catch them on sale.

Oh, yeah baby! You go from a TNT 2 to a 8500 or GF4 4200 and you'll be smOk'n!!!!
Kinda like the difference between riding a trike and a crotch rocket.
See this graph to comprehend the contrast

Wow. That's a lot of frames. Will the graphics be like smooth or something? Something like graphics of PS2?

Does anyone have a screenshot of a game that can compare poor framerates to good ones? Thanks.

not sure what you mean by "graphics" but yes the action will be smoother.
having that quantum leap in the number of frames per second that the new vid card gives will largely stop the jerky motion when there is fast movement in the game or when there is a lot of visual detail in a game.
Easier to blow the enemy's head off from 200 yards that way.... And see all the gory details thru your scope.

Re: Screenshot
Screenshot won't be able to portray framerate improvement, since framerate pertains to motion.

Is gainward the best brand for geforce4? I checked my local store and it cost 300 for the ti4200 128 mb. Is that a high price or cheap?

What about other brands such as ABIT and ASUS? Thanks.

Gainward is one of the better makers for the nVidia Titaniums, but WOW, that is too much for the Gainward G4 4200 Ti!
Newegg has it's high end model, the Golden Sample for $165.00

Go to www.ncix.com and serach for ti4200 - there are about 22 hits, that's all Canadian $$$. Any of those will make that TNT2 look like crap.

Hmmm, it looks like one, in USD that'd be $183.34. That sounds reasonable to me as long as shipping isn't too high (total is only $18 USD more than Newegg's price).
