PNY Geforce 4 440MX: Get a better Video card?
Last week, I bought a video card, PNY Geforce 4 440MX, as part of my PC building. It is not yet out of the packaging.
I read some reports that this card is not powerful and I'm considering taking it back to the shop where I bought it from. ------------ UPDATE ------- I forgot to add this one more thing. It has been said the Geforce 4 400MX is power-hungry and it requires a 350 Watt power supply as the minimum. I did not know this when I ordered the ATX Tower case with a 300 Watt PS. ![]() -------- END Update ---------- It lacks some of the features in the advanced model the Ti4200 or Ti4400, I'm not sure which model number it is. I also read DirectX9 has some features that the Geforce 4 440mX won't be to support it while the Ti card can. My question, should I take it back for a better model? I do want want a fast Video card but on a budget. How about the ATI Radeon 7500 AGP or the Hercules (Kyro II chipset)? Please feel free to comment on the PNY Geforce card or suggest any other alternatives. It has been playing on my mind that I'll be disappointed by the Geforce 4 card. Whatever the new card may be, it has to be fitted in this PC system I'm building. Here's my proposed specs. ASUS A7V333 motherboard Soundblaster 512 PCI (have it) Athlon 1700XP CPU with fan (have it) 258Mb DDR Toshiba DVD Rom (have it) Freecom CD-RW (have it) Any information would be helpful. I just upgraded one of my systems from the GeForce 2 to the 4, and I'm quite happy with it. For the price, it's a really decent card.

The MMX series is a value range: all the power of Ti, just without the bells and whistles.
Unless you do heavy gaming, then you won't need these features (mainly things like Pixel Shaders which were used in Morrowind and similar things for the water.) The best card for price:quality ratio I would say would be the GeForce 3 ti 200. Available at komplett.co.uk for £68, which is a bargain. It has enough power to harness practically all of todays games (but it may struggle with Doom 3) and things like Pixel Shaders. As for the 350W thing. Well the Creative GeForce 3 displays 250W requirement. But I also know that their GeForce 4 Ti requirement is 350W . So make your on assumption on a PNY MMX.

I recommend the GeForce 4 Ti4200, and your power supply is just fine as long as it's a quality brand.

Hi Jova,
Just to make sure: The GF 4 MX card is Not even close to a GF 4 card. In fact, it is not much better than a GF 2 card, and a GF 3 will kick it's bootie! Also, the MX instruction set is not that of a GF 3 or 4. None of the current GF cards are DX 9. The soon to be released GeForce fx (GF "5") will be DX 9 compatible, and the ATI 9700 Pro is DX 9 compatible. TwoRails |

Hi Jova,
Yea, you should have got the Verto Ti4200 64Mb. Where did you but it - PC World? If you've got the money, then take it back and exchange it. The Ti4200 should cost you £115 - £125 from PC World - depending on the branch. Alternatively, if you can get your money back, then you can get one from Dabs for £105. http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-se...d=asc&stab=ref HTH |

I've exchanged the 440MX card for the PNY GEforce 4 Ti4200. I'm happy now.
Mike: I've bought it from GAME and I took it back yesterday. I explained I wanted to exchange it for the Ti4200. Funny thing, I did take a DVD Rom back to PCWorld the other day. It never played DVD Roms! ![]() Everyone: Thanks for your help, I apprecaite it. I'm very happy with my purchase. I have now bought everything I need for my new PC. Still awaiting for my new parts, though. Cheers, John |

How much did it cost from Game, Jova?
I'll be getting one myself, but I'm just waiting for a good deal before pouncing on it. |

Mike,
The PNY Geforce 4 Ti4200 card from GAME was £140. The price may vary from branch to branch, but I don't think that'll happen. I would shop around and see if there is a cheaper price somewhere. I need this card for the weekend. I see you're from Scotland as well. The GAME shop I went to was in Buchannan St, Glasgow.Cheers, John |
