Gah! DirectX 8.1b problems? I think

Okay, a bit of an odd problem here, I couldn't find any references to it so I thought I'd ask.

Recently I downloaded the UT2003 demo so I could play with a couple of friends who liked it.

Downloaded to my desktop -- worked fine, couldn't seem to find any problems. I'll post the specs a little later when I have access to it, currently not at home so I don't.

Downloaded it to my laptop -- never could get it to start. At first it was giving me a program error on DrawIndexedPrimitive(); or something like that, since I can no longer recreate the error I'm going from memory here.

Restarted the computer to fix that bug -- some problem with re-initialization of my video card after hibernation in WinXP makes it almost impossible to run video applications after I've gone into hibernation before I reboot.

Now when I run it I'm getting a 'You have caused a critical error in the DirectX 8.1 runtimes. Download DirectX 8.1b (or later) runtimes to fix this error.'

Okay, wierd, but I guess it makes some sense. I especially love the 'You have caused a critical error...' I go to Microsoft's site, search for "DirectX 8.1b" -- get to the DX homepage. Click on the download link, it gives me a redirect link since I'm using XP to Service Pack I, which reputedly contains the DX 8.1b runtimes. Download, install, etc etc. No errors, finishes fine, restart.

Okay, I try to run the demo again... same error. Says I do not have the 8.1b runtimes, when I should have just downloaded them.

Run dxdiag, it tells me I'm running DirectX 8.1 as my version. Great. So I uninstall the Service Pack, redownload it, reinstall it... and get the same error.

I checked, Service Pack I comes up as installed on all Windows checks and also on 3rd party software checks. I'm stumped.

OS: Windows XP Professional, release 5.1, build 2600.
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 Mobile CPU @ 1.7GHz
Memory: 512megs DDR SDRam
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon 32mb
Vid Card Drivers: ati2dvag.dll, ver6.13.10.6094
Sound Card: ESS Allegro
Drivers: es198x.sys, ver5.12.01.1171

P.S: All Dxdiag tests checked out a-okay. Can't seem to find anyone else that plays it having similar problems.

A guess - your video subsystem doesn't meet the minimums for the game?

Welcome to the PCM Forums, InnerFlame!

Some games cannot be run in laptop machines. Have you looked at the Readme file to see if this game has known issues with mobile systems?
