3DMark Crashing

Hello,

I just tried to run 3DMark2001 SE build 330 on my latest build:

Iwill KK266
AMD Athlon XP 1600+
PNY GeForce3 40.41 Det.
512 Crucial PC-133

When I click 'Benchmark', it starts the car chase, then either crashes or locks up. Any ideas? Also, wrong forum, but the VIA Hardware Moniter shows the +2V as running +0.28V. I've never heard of a +2V, is the moniter correct? I've also run SANDRA burn-in for an hour with no crashes/lock-ups whatsoever, if that helps. Thanks......

Are 3D games crashing too?

Sounds like video card heat issues to me. Try some other 3D games and also try some different video drivers.

Let us know.

Does your system support AGP texturing?, look at the Direct X diagnostic screen (under system info >tools) and try turning it off, this worked for me on my old system!
Good luck

Yes, it supports AGP texturing. I don't think it's a heat issue, but I'll check anyway. I have a feeling I need to update my AGP .inf through the VIA 4-in-1's. Thanks for the replies!

OK, haven't tried any games, but I will in a minute. I just tried 3DMark again, and where it crashed the first time, it gave me a 'Runtime Error'. Something about the application trying to close in a strange way, or something, I didn't get the whole thing. So, what does 'Runtime error' mean? It looked like something to do with 'Microsoft C++ Library'. Anyone? Thanks!

Another update: tried to run the MaxPC demo of N.O.L.F2; Crashed and rebooted the system. Then, I tried a Quake3A demo; that ran fine for about a half-hour. Then, I tried my Comanche4 demo; crashed and rebooted after about 5 seconds. After every reboot, I got the 'The system has recovered from a serious error' message. Anyone see a pattern here? I don't, any ideas would be welcome! Also, ran the SANDRA burn-in for a hour and a half, no lockups/crashes. Thanks......

AWD,
What are your System and CPU temps?

Sounds like a Video Card problem. You are running the latest drivers correct? Running the latest Direct X version?

I also notice that You overclocked your Geforce 4 Ti 4600. Try to underclock it back to factory setting and see if the problems still occur.

Sounds like when you run a program that does not require any 3D, it will run fine, but when you run a 3D game, it will crash on you or give you an error.

You have a very good Video Card. Shouldn't be doing this, unless you overclocked it too much.

Ehhhhh, guess I didn't make it clear, the problem system is not the one in my sig, it's the spare-parts build I listed in the first post of the topic. Temps are A-OK, 95F CPU/62F System. I've tried the 40.41 and the 40.72 Det.'s, only because I have both versions on disc. DX is 8.1.xxxxx, don't know exactly. It's whatever version ships with XP Home. I'm going to try the latest 4-in-1's later, then go from there. If that doesn't help, I think I'll start part-swapping. Thanks for the replies, I'll report back.........

Update: updated the Via AGP driver, still crashes. Tried setting AGP Aperture lower, still crashes. Tried enabling AGP fast writes, still crashes. Also, I ran 3DMark with all the game demos disabled, it runs the fill-rate benchmarks fine, and the bump-mapping benchmark fine as well. Hell, it will run any of them except the game demos. I'm going to swap a G4MX440 in for the G3 tomorrow, but I doubt that it will work. Think it may be a DirectX problem? If the G4 doesn't work, then I'll do a complete re-install of XP.

With the G3, try some 3x.xx drivers.

Tried the 30.82's, no change. I'm really running out of ideas here.

Are you absolutely sure that the fan on the video card hasn't quit running? Is the Heat Sink fastened securely to the video chipset? This sure sounds alot like a hot video card, cpu, or even memory stick. I've had similar problems in the past though, that a new set of drivers fixed. Have you tried removing all the other cards and re-installing them one at the time, running 3d games between each new card install? It might serve you well to back to square one with this build and try doing that.

I know that sounds really obvious, but I've been building systems for a few years, and I still get really easy fixes every once in a while that I fail to try until after I've exhausted all other options (some of which were longshots). Never be too proud to try the really simple and obvious stuff. Even if someone else is watching.

The fan on the card is running, the system and CPU temps are really good. If it was a CPU/RAM heat issue, why doesn't the system crash in anything else? I can run any benchmark I want, PCMark2002, SANDRA, you name it, solid as a rock. Not to mention that Quake3A ran fine for almost an hour! The only other thing I have in there is a modem, sound is onboard. Tomorrow I'll swap out the G3 for the G4MX, as I said earlier. I'll see what happens, and go from there. Thanks!

Update: YES! Got it working! Turns out I needed the 4.38 4-in-1 AGP VxD. Installed that, works like a charm. A solid 6788 in 3DMark, and all the demos that crashed before work fine now. Thanks for all the ideas, you guys were a big help!

You're telling me.........I'll never again go with a VIA board unless I have no alternative. Only with a VIA chipset would I need a specific driver version(not the latest!) to make everything work right.

That's one of the reasons why I stopped building AMD based machines.

AMD is good. VIA is bad. Period.

What about SiS? I built a SiS-based machine, and it's very, very stable.

I'm doing an Asus A7N266-VM build for my Dad in a few weeks, so I'll have a chance to develop an opinion about the nForce boards.
