A good sound card, just alittle over 50$ is the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.
Newegg has them on sale for 62$ dollars. Below is a link to it if interested: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...118-101&DEPA=1 |

Hi Jeff Roy,
For around $100, the ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB would be best, for around $70 check out the ATI Radeon 9000 64MB. As for the sound card, I second Pants' suggestion for the TB Santa Cruz. Hope that helps. |

For an rpg gamer, I would say the 8500. For a online fps gamer, a gf4ti card, and some are very near $100 right now. Get one with 128 megs, as they often clock as fast as the 64 meg versions.
TB sound may be better than creative, especialy in a via chipset mobo. |

The Santa Cruz is a fine card, but it's old technology as is the SB Live - and with an Intel chipset the Live causes no problems - so at half the price the Live is well worth a look. Also - the Santa Cruz is over the specified $50 budget.
I have a friend with a Dell Dimension 4100 with a Santa Cruz - he loves it. He ordered a new Dell and it came with a SB Live. He had every intention of swapping cards till he fired up the new one and listened - he told me that he really couldn't tell the difference! |

You can get a 128 meg 8500 at newegg, as well a Hercules Fortissimo III card is very nice, and inexpensive I believe.

I'd go with the 8500 128MB and the Hercules Fortissimo III. Great sound from the card and excellant software for an easy install.

That 8500LE I posted for $94 was at Newegg, as was the $34 SB Live.

in case your looking for a nvidia card the geforce 4 ti 4200 can be had for 117 @ newegg. anlthough to save money best bet would be a 8500 i guess, although a sound card could be had for 30 and u can get the geforce.
search www.newegg.com for EVGA Nvidia GF4 TI4200 64MB Video Card RETAIL BOX. right now its 118$ with free shipping. no games at the moment will use 128 mb of memory for the textures, its no biggy to save 40 bucks. Last edited by strossos; 12-17-2002 at 04:35 PM. |
