Direct 3D and Half Life Probelm
I have Direct X 8.1 on my computer, all my Half Life mods use Direct 3D graphics (640 x 480). Everytime I quit into the menu the screen goes black. I can go back into the game with no problem but have to press Ctrl-alt-Delete to quit the game. I have Day of Defeat with the same display settings and I can quit into the menu with no problem. My video card is a SiS 630/730 16 Meg.

After I learned that d3d used 15 lines of code to pull off what took ogl 4 for the same, I never use d3d.

Open Gl works, it's just kind of slow

I play Counter-Strike, and I use Open GL, 1024x768, and it stays pegged at 60 FPS. So if Open GL at 640x480 on your system is "slow" you need a new video card, lol.

What you have is not a gaming card - it's a general purpose budget video card. Jenni has a point, blunt as it may be.

Well, I probably can't get a new card for a few months. But thanks for the advice.

I assume your playing this mod on the internet. When You go to quit the game, instead of hitting esc to get to the menu, hit the ~ key to bring down the console and simply type, quit. It will then exit to your desktop.

Hmm, would 768 MB Ram make a graphical difference?

That will likely have no effect on your card's performance. Well, unless you only had 64 megs ram to begin with.

She may not have a ref rate fix, or even want one. 60 is very playable.

The refresh rate fix only applies to Direct3D. I've always played in OpenGL, probably because my first card was a Voodoo, but anyway...I'm sure that if I was running in Direct3D I would get more, but 60 FPS is absolutely smooth, so "if it ain't broke..."

With my Celly 400 cpu, I'd fall off my chair if I got 60 fps in a 1st Person Shooter!
Hey Jenni! I'm back in the CS saddle. Where do you play most often, I need some lessons.
