looking for a comparison win xp and win 98se
ok here is my question
1 PC xp 1700+ AMD 512 Ram DDR 2100 80 GB WDC 8meg cache 7200 rpm 64meg Gfroce 3 ti-200 SB 5.1 Live cable ISP connection Here is what i am wondering, It is clear the system would handle win xp with no problems, but i am very happy with the way win 98SE works on it. Ok, this computer I use for gaming., Mainly EQ. I know I have pushed it about as far as win 98se can handle. If i want more ram I would have to upgrade my OS, since win98 is not going to benifit from more then I have. But here is what i am wondering, with out making hardware changing, what kind of preformance difference could i expect if I changed from win 98se to win xp. I mean Win xp handles memory better right? But with the increase in system overhead would I have about the same preformance with no real increase or decrease? I know if I upgrade to win xp, I could drop in another 512 meg of ram pretty cheap. Also, one other choice would be maybe win 2k instead of win xp, any comparisons? I don't know the gaming possibilities of win 2k but I would like to hear what anyone has to say, I am considering this one because I have ready access to win 2k.

It will handle XP no prob. I originally had ME and a P4 1.7Ghz in this machine and never noticed any performance differences other than not slowing down over time as the Win9x series is famous for. I never reboot my XP machine unless a program is installed or a driver updated and it runs great.

most ppl will find this hard to believe, but I let my win98se machine run for weeks with out rebooting too. Only real reason I am considering an upgrade is because ram is cheap and if I upgrade my OS I can put alot more ram in, however I don't want to upgrade my OS to find that i need more ram to have the current lvl of preformance. But if the preformance is about the same then I could upgrade, then add a ton of ram Like I would like to have increased preformance. I think i need to partition my hard drive, install xp and test it.

Byte,
Windows 98SE is better for gaming than Windows XP. Windows XP also has that Monitor Refresh Rate problem, and Windows 98SE doesn't. You have 512MB of RAM. I guarantee you that none of your programs that are running in the background are taking up more than 512MB. I only have 256MB, and that's all I need. No lag. No Loss of peformance. I never have to use all 256MB of it, so why bother for more RAM. Although more RAM doesn't hurt. Stay with WIN98SE for gaming. Consider WIN2K and WINXP for the stability and for the security. |

Microsoft hasn't even announced a patch to fix the Monitor Refresh Rate with WIN2K and WINXP. Also, the major Video companies(Nvidia, ATI) havent even included a fix in their video drivers.
Stick with WIN98SE, until like Microsoft announces a patch to fix the problem. But reading from benchmarks, looks like WINXP owns any other system in gaming performance, I think towards FPS. But I have always heard to stick with WIN98SE if you are going to do gaming. Look at the bright side with WIN98SE, you get to use full DOS commands

I have a customer that plays EQ on a Win98SE machine with a gig of ram. 98 handles the ram just fine with the Vcache mod (MaxFileCache=524288). A GF4Ti with 128 ram will help a lot too.

As for the refresh problem, there are third party soloutions which work just fine for all nVidia and ATI cards. I run the Rage 3D tweak and it handles the situation perfectly and because of this, I don't see any reason to shy away from XP for gaming.

Even when using NTFS, HAL?
I mean, AFAIK you cannot run DOS games with NTFS. Plz correct me if I'm wrong.

I still play Duke Nukem 3D. The sound quality isn't what it was under DOS or Win9x, but it still works.

Good.
So far I've had little trouble with DOS games in WXP Pro RC1, but of course I'm using FAT32. However this version will expire within a month or so and I'll buy XP Pro and format my HD with NTFS, so I'm pretty concerned about the matter since I have several DOS games I wanna keep on playing. |

I can play DOS games perfectly under NTFS in win2k. I dont think NTFS has an affect on DOS games at all.

I am planning on dual-booting XP and 98SE in the near future, if only to get experience using 98SE.

That's what's stopped me so far: having to download two sets of drivers for everything.

AD, this is how i set up my test system.
Partition 1, WIn 98 se 10gb Partition 2, win XP 10GB Partition 3 Swap - 1GB Partition 4 fat 32 remaining space . since win xp did not require me to download any more drivers, SO FAR, I only had to use my win98 driver. I like the way XP is running on this test machine, I may do away with the win98. But I want to test everquest in win 2k |
