how can I watch tv on my pc?

Ive got a Ge Force II 64 MB DDR Graphics card and a Cable internet connection. My pc is loaded, and I use the XP operating system. What do I have to do to watch tv on it? Also, Ive heard of people using their computers as sort of a tivo box. Anyone with any input?

What you need is a TV card, and a free PCI slot in your PC.
There are also external TV tuners available, so don't worry if you have all slots full.

Hauppauge and ATI make very good ones:

I have a friend who uses the ATI card and says it is wonderful. Has a 19" screen. Isn't it great, only $1000 for a 19" tv! *

* That is the cost of the computer with the card. Cards are much cheaper.

I have All-in-Wonders in two of my machines. In mine, I use it like a Tivo. In my wife's computer, she uses it to record the soap opera "The Days of Our Lives", then uses it to make screen captions for her web page. See, we get the show in Canada a day before ppl do in the states, so it's quite easy to make a spoiler page. The TV network loves it and she often gets suggestions on special episodes directly from NBC on what to capture. Coming up on 1 million hits since May 2nd and she wanted me to plug that her page was even mentioned in soap opera digest.

Can I put another card in just for tv? I really like my Ge Force card for graphics and for gaming. How would you go about switching back and forth?

I spoke too soon. After reading about the cards on ATI's site, I see that the tv card is not a video card. Its only function is tv.

if you have a video card with tv in/out you can use your comp as a tivo. simply connect the s-video cable into the tv in jack on your video card. i believe there is software that enables you to start recording at certain times or whatever. id say HAL9000 would know more then me.

I don't know about just the ATI TV tuner cards, but the All-in-Wonders come with the Guide+ program which allows you to check off your favorites and they are recorded automatically.

Hauppauge cards also come with a Scheduler program that will automatically record what you want. Well, I have the WinTV PVR, with MPEG-2 encoding chip, not sure if non-PVR-cards come with scheduler, too.
But I believe the DVB cards also come with a scheduler program.

When I bought my ATI tuner card a while back I read multiple horror stories about conflicts with the ATI tuners and nVidia video cards. I'm not saying it will happen to you but just thought I would throw it out. It may be a better idea to just go with the Hauppage if you are a geforce person.

Anyone else know about possible conflicts? I've never heard of Hauppage cards though. How come they play with Ge Force cards better than ATI?

I have the ATI TV ve tuner card, and it too comes with that guide. You can record programs that you schedule etc.. I personally like the card (tv tuner) nice functionality, but if you are going to use it as a source for video capture (it has that capability) you will want a 500mhz or better system. (the faster the better)

The cards being discussed- do they only receive analog signals or can they also process digital/HDTV broadcasts?

There are analog cards, those can only receive and work with analog signals, and there are digital cards, they can only receive DVB streams (MPEG-2) and decode it.
Dunno about an analog/digital combo card so far.
www.hauppauge.com

As there is no HDTV here in Germany I haven't seen a HDTV card so far. My current card is analog and my next will be digital as we finally got digital TV lines at home.

Ive got ATT digital cable, will these cards record/play that signal in analog, or will they not be able to do anything with the digital signal. Ive also got basic service to my house with an analog signal I can use in a pinch. Many less channels from which to choose though.
