PC processor VS console processor
Let's just say that my current Pentium3 733 CPU can match up with the X-BOX that also clocked at 733mHz regardless what graphic card that to be used.Is this possible?

I'm not sure, try playing Unreal Tournament on high settings and see how fast that goes. Then play Splinter Cell.

I don't think it would. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I once played Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on my PC using an N64 emulator (I did it just to try it out and deleted after). Now certainly my PC has much better specs than that of a Nintendo 64 but the game still suffered from framerate drops and the graphics were not the great. Not sure if that is due in part to the emulator or not.

I think it would. If you have a gf3 or better (no gf2/mx/tnt or gf4mx card can hang with an xbox's enhanced gf3) and enough ram to run a real os, plus a fast drive, and a quality sound card (these are not made by creative, as far as I am concerned) there ya go.
I do not know what os runs the xbox, suspect it is some very slimmed down code that is just enough to do the job, with very little overhead, making it slightly more effective than an all purpose os like 2k/xp or most others. If I member crectly, there is a reward out to put linux on the xbox. ![]() There were to be two xbox's, one amd and one intel. The amd was dropped, and nvidia decided that the amd technology they developed could make a fine mobo. So we have the nforce and nforce2 mobos. I have the nforce, and it has the sound of the xbox and the dual channel ddr and most all the technical features. Mine is not limited, though, to 64 megs ram, an 8 gig drive, or a gf3. WD400BB drive, 512 megs ddr at fastest settings, and creme de la creme, a gf4ti4200@300/490... 733MHz? no. Try 1533MHz... take that, M$! Last edited by Blakhart; 12-19-2002 at 12:20 PM. |

I dont' remember the details and specifics, but I think that I remember reading that the xbox is designed so it bypasses some of the bottleneck's you have on pc.
w/ a pc and a graphics card you have to work w/ a memory and system bus that aren't anywhere close to as fast as the cpu or the gpu. Therefore, you essentially have two seperate processors communicating over a relatively slower link. This causes much slower performance when you're working w/ graphics intense stuff. Therefore, the xbox was designed to work around this somehow-- I don't know if they share the same processor or they have a different architecture or what. Just remember reading an article on it. so... is it any faster. Depends what you're doing. Gaming-- maybe not (just a note after the fact: I'm not really what you'd call a gamer, so I don't have a preference for console or pc really. My last gaming system was a used Super Nintendo.) |

They use hypertransport, an amd design, that has 12gps transfer duplex, 6gps simplex. So does the nforce mobo.

and consoles were made for one purpose, to play video games
. If PC's were made with this in mind, they'd be that much better.
