First Person Shooter gamers...

...Do any of you use a device other than keyboard + mouse?
If so, what?

I'm contemplating a game pad like Nostromo or Dual Strike.

TIA for your input.

Hell No! I play some decent FPS playstation 2 games. I have an adapter that lets me use a ps2 controller on my pc but I don't use it for FPS games. If you really want tto use a controller, make sure it is PS2 style. Two nice thumbsticks, 4 or more buttons on top cuz your thumbs are busy.

This is my opinion

For first person shooter games on PC's you can't beat mouse and keyboard.

For instance, Max Payne and UT I play with a optical logitech mouse with 2 buttons and a webwheel button.

I'm currently using the K + M setup and that's actually ALL I've ever used - I'm quite good at this setup. But I'm also wondering if there's another level of perfomance I can get from a new Christmas Toy.

I play Max Payne with my MS IntelliMouse Optical and my keyboard. I have all the actions mapped to a mouse button(I have five! ), and just use the keyboard to move. Then again, Max Payne is a 3rd person shooter, not an FPS. Texuspete, where did you find this PS2-to-PC controller adapter? I am very interested........

It would seem there would be some other hardware that would be better than the standard K + M, but we were just talking about that at work the other day- there's nothing faster! And Speed and Accuracy is what an FPS game needs....

I agree. I actually tried the Microsoft Strategic Commander (it was a free deal from a friend) and, of course, as the name suggests, it's probably better suited for a strategy game. I couldn't press combinations of buttons on it
(ie. Strafe-Right + Forward Run).

I may find after I play with another device that the K+M is the end all.
I intend to try the Dual Strike AND the Nostromo for my UT2003 and May Payne playing.
I'll give you a full report :-)

Not everyone qrew up using K+M. I started my first FPS(Doom II) with a Gravis Phoenix F+W Center. Worked pretty well but the joystick genre took a huge leap forward with the development of the Madcatz Panther XL, which is a joystick/trackball combination. This can be a very effective device in games that allow joysticks. I have played on one for about 5 or 6 years now. If you want to visit a community of joystick/trackballers go here and you will see what is current in that area:

WHELP,
No joy on the Dual Strike. I got the Nostromo n50 Speedpad and I'm good to go. The macros make it REALLY useful for advanced game play in UT2003 such as quad jumps, dodging, etc. In other games it really just functions as a keyboard replacement (Max Payne, AvP2). What I didn't like about the MS Strategic Commander was that you couldn't press two keys simultaneously to get a combined movement (such as pressing the FORWARD and STRAFE-LEFT to get a lateral motion). You CAN do that with the Speedpad.
I find it physically comfortable and easy to use. The software that came with it is intuitive and easy to use also. I feel more comfortable beating it up too; something I was afraid of doing to my keyboard (MS Natural Keyboard Pro). If I'm trying to type a message, though it gets in the way of using the keyboard because I move the keyboard out of the way. I'm usually chatting on Gameshare with my buddies when I frag anyway so no bid deal here.
Overall, I know that my gameplay has improved some. I wouldn't say that it improved EXPONENTIALLY or Statistically Significantly, but it do have a leading edge I didn't have before - I can FEEL it.

Just wanted to share,

No news is "old" news, until you've read the news.... Not everyone as seen this...

I just bought my first mouse, as I've always used TrackBalls. It's getting a lot of use getting use to it. I usually just use the keyboard, but some games don't have an option for keybrd only use, so I had to get the mouse as the trackball just wasn't cuttin' it.

The only other controller than Mouse/Keyboard that I've known of being used, at least amongst competitive players in UT, was the Panther XL.

Mostly K+M.

However, if I'm really tired, I'll use a MS Sidewinder Gamepad, so I can play sitting back in my recliner chair.

Reaction time is much slower and accuracy requires some practice, but it really is a relaxing way of playing.

When I'm a bit older, l might use a rocking chair - that should be interesting with a force feedback controller

Of course, this is strictly for Single Player mode.

Hi Lord Prism,

Thanks for the "review" ! Sounds like the Speedpad is pretty kewl! In games that need a mouse, like Max Payne, do you still need a mouse??

TwoRails

I don't think it old....look how long the Inside The Case thread has been around. The interest is still alive

Hi! You still need a mouse for all games actually. The speedpad is for the left hand so you'll need the right hand on the mouse. I was pretty much beating up my keyboard whenever I was fragging so I was interested in an alternative.
