NEC and Hitachi are in the same quality class. Between those 2, get whichever has the features you prefer.

I haven't been around NEC Monitors very much but I haven't cared much for the ones I have seen.

The better Hitachi's are nice and bright, I like the 753s and they are not terribly expensive.

The better Sony's and Mitsubishi's and have been the best ones I have ever used. Slight edge to Sony for better quality control. Once in awhile you will see a Mitsubishi you can't properly adjust. I have yet to have that happen with a Sony out of the box.

But make sure the thin lines from the grill aperture don't bother you. I just can't stand them!

A good brand is Viewsonic, but it's not one of the cheapest though.

I like Samsung, but I hear their Cust. Support is non-existent.

Nuc has a point. If at all possible you should look at the monitor or at least one of the same model before buying if at all possible. Those grey lines are only evident on pure white backgrounds and I don't even notice them but I know some people never get used to them. The additional clarity they offer is it more than worth it to me. Monitors are like ice cream get the kind you like.
