processor for gaming ?
GeForce 4 Ti4400, GeForce 4 Ti4600, or ATI Radeon 9700. Those are the three best graphic processors on the market RJ note: CPU doesn't matter at all. Choose a nice mainboard, nice RAM and get the CPU that fits on it. There are no noticeable differences for gaming between any of the P4 and AthlonXPs.

Couldn't agree with RJ more on his statement. With the speed of CPU's these days, they are a non-issue when it comes to playing games. Take your pick on AMD/Intel, then once you choose between the two, get the one that's the best bang for the buck, for example, in the Intel (for my area anyway), best bang for the buck is either the 2.0Ghz or the 2.4Ghz (533Mhz), and for the AMD it appears to be the XP 2100+. Then put some cash into the vid card and get something that will really perform.

Hi FantasySoul,
First, I totally agree with RJ and HAL9000 about the AMD / Intel thing. Also, the cooling thing is also blown out of proportions. An AMD burning 70 Watts generates the same amount of heat as an Intel burning 70 Watts, and both require about the same cooling requirements. I've been building with AMD exclusively for years and normally use the "stock" HS/Fan combo and have never had a heat related failure in either my own boxes, or my builds for others. HTH TwoRails |

TwoRails,
Using stock heatsink or fan combo doesn't seem to solve the problem. You see,my friend got on gaming with it and after approximately 3 hours. The CPU turn out to be very slow and ran into a crash!! Although the performance was outstanding..........

The Thermaltake Volcanos and Vantecs are excellant for AMD XP CPUs. I use these on all the buids I have done lately and the temps are no problem. I also use Artic Silver 2 on all HSF installs.

If you'd like a better HS/fan combo, I'm not trying to talk you out of it. Your friends system is the kind I like to get hold of, as I'd go 2-to-1 that there was more to it than just using a retail HS/Fan. Maybe the jumpers weren't set correctly, or OC'd some and / or voltage to high, or the like. Maybe even a drive ribbon over the fan. I've even see the wrong and underrated HS/fan combo installed. My main box, this one, is running an 1800+. I've been on it all day. I'm on vacation, so beside comming here, I've also been playing games all day, and that's with my wife on the client box (this is the host) surfing the Web and playing SWF games. I've never gone over 41°C. I think that's a good example of why I say there most likely was other factors involved. Heck, setting a jumper or voltage incorrectly is easy to do, and I've done it more times than I care to admit. There are just too many systems out there, millions?, that run with stock cooling with no problem for there to be a problem IMHO. Again, I'm not knocking getting a better combo. ![]() TwoRails |

At this time I would get an ASUS nforce2 mobo, the deluxe version. And a gf4ti or 8500 or faster card. 512megs ddr and a fast drive and you are all set. The way to performance seems to be getting a xp1700tbred B core and lowering the mult but jacking the fsb way up. Have to use good mem but it seems worth it. Many are running at 200 fsb, and the gaming is outrageous. Then again swore my next would be a p4 on rdram.

Well my Asus mobo wiht a 900@1ghz and a ATI 7500 64mb ddr and 256mb pc133 micron ram runs all the games I like. You dont really need that much of a pc to run good games.. but if you get into pc gaming yeah you could start spending a lot of money..
