DirectX 8.1 & Windows Me ?
I have been reluctant to install DirectX 8.1 to upgrade from 8.0 I currently have .Iam runnig a P3 750MHZ 256MB SDRAM. I have rad many post from others that had nothing but problems with DirctX 8.1 and WinMe , many having to reinstall their O/S ? I have a ATI RADEON 32M.B. PCI (no AGP slot on M.B. :-( )graphics card. There is a driver update for this graphics card , however it requires DirectX 8.1 . My system is very stable and the games Iam currently using like Quake III , NASCAR Racing 4 , Microsofts Flight Simulator, etc , all run fine .However some of the new games like Spiderman , require DirectX 8.1 ! I had heard that DirectX 8.1 is not compatable with Windows Me , is that true , if not any suggestions on how to safley install this upgrade ! Thanks to All NicRic

I have been using directx 8.1 with my kids PC that has Winme with no trouble. ever since 8.1 came out. I suspect the troubles you have experienced are more graphics card related or at least the combo of that particular graphics card with winme and DX8.1. I've been using nvidia graphics cards though.

Hello,
DirectX 8.1 is compatible with Windows Me. Anyway I wouldn't upgrade to DirectX 8.1, get DirectX 9. Before installing DirectX you should create a system restore point, so if you're getting problems (what I don't think. A friend has Windows ME and I upgraded his DirectX to 8.1 and he never had a problem, and we played together in LAN alot) you'll be able to make a rollback of your system. RJ

I agree, I would like to hear of all these so called issues as when we were installing WinME on systems at work, every single one of them got DX 8.1 before they left the shop. Even systems in for service got that as part of the maintainance.

ME is just 98 with a better interface and some extra features and tweaks (some of which are improvments over Windows 98). It is not more unstable than 98, if it is installed properly.
One advantage of ME is that before you upgrade you can make a Restore Point, so that if something goes wrong you can correct it. So install DirectX 9 and the ATI update, but don't forget to make a restore point before you start the installs. |

I don't care for any of 9X OS's but I think Me developed into a better OS then 98. I have seen tons of coputers running 8.1 also with no issues. I would install it or Direct 9 and never look back.

Now that Directx 9 is out, where can one find 8.1? M$ is infuriating me on this one!
It's either 8.0a for Win95 or 9.0 which I don't want. Those are the only options I find on their site and no other site is downloading 8.1 that I can find thru Google. Any clues? TIA

For what it is worth, I installed dx 9 and the ati 3.0 drivers there was quite a performance improvment. Both my xp and win2k systems showed improvment.
