3D Gaming On an On-Board Video

I've set up a PC for my friend. It's got an Athlon XP 1700+ processor, an ASUS mobo with on-board video and sound. It has no AGP slot, so we're stuck with its on-board video chip. It's got 256MB of memory but would be lessened since some of which are gonna be shared with the video. I thought she was only into light gaming and plain desktop work but recently she wants to play Battle Realms and Medal of Honor on this machine. Will this set-up be able to handle such games? What do you think?

Ya, it will play it, the graphics won't be as pleasing or as fast as a the hot AGP cards. Add another 256Mb and crank up the RAM usage to the video.

Which Asus mobo is it?

I would suggest a PCI Geoforce 4 card (PNY do one) would give her a speed boost and improve image quality for those games.

It won't be as good as an AGP card but it should be a lot better than most onboard graphics.

Scott_d, it's running on WinXP Pro.

Hal, thank you.

Mike, it's the microATX ASUS with the SiS chipsets.

A PCI Radeon 9000 would do wonders, if she wants to upgrade, its the best PCI video card to get.

beware that most pc hasPCI 33mhz and its tranfer rate is about 130 Mbps.
AGP 1.0 (or AGP2x) tranfer rate is about 250 Mbps.
PCI 66mhz's tranfer rate is about 500 Mbps.
AGP 2.0 (or AGP 4x) tranfer rate is about 1000 Mbps.
AGP3.0 (or AGP 8x) is about 2000 Mbps.

I think it'd better if you sell this mobo on ebay and buy a new (cheap?)one with agp2.0 or 3.0.
I use Radeon 7500 PCI version.I regret that I bought it.

Well, anything with an agp slot will be better regardless. The differences betwixt 33/66 agp and the new 8x is not very noticeable. Never has been. Like 1%, same for sideband addressing and fastwrites, wich, along with agp 4x, have stability issues in some cases.
Gimmickery at best.
Best bet is the best card you can afford.
