Question Best video card for less than $200

What are your opinions on this? I was looking at getting the gainward/cardexpert GeForce 4 Ti4200 128Mb DDR, 3.6ns for $178 at newegg for my new build.

thanks ^dan

I've heard that the first batch of those cards had some bad parts and many of them are faulty but if you get a good one, which I assume you will, they're great cards. I'm sure they have the issues cleared up by now but it's something to watch for.

A Ti 4200/4400 is the best card out there under $200, by far. Gainward makes great cards, too.

have you ever bought anything from gameve.com? Their ratings look good on resellerratings.com, so they look pretty good. The Ti440 is $193 at newegg w/ free shipping, so depending on how the shipping is on gameve.com, i might get it at newegg.

thanks ^dan

If your set on Nvidea GPUs then go w/the 4200. But if your not, take a good look at ATI's Radeon 9500pro. Go check out the reviews. I've heard they're out of stock at most places right now, but be back after the new year.

I got this card for $198 at mwave.com. I've read the reviews myself, and this baby blows the Ti4200 away and bites at the heals of the 4600. Also If you wanted to be adventureous, you can Overclock the 9500pro and It will eat the Ti4600 for luch.
Just adding my 2cents

I was looking at some benchmarks, and the Ti 4400 beat the 9500pro in everything, and it is only $193 at newegg. This is a hard decision though, the 9500pro is dx9 ready, but the 4400 is only dx8. i dont know how long i will have to go until i need to get a new video card to support dx9. I guess i will have to read some more reviews. could someone post some links to some good reviews for the 9500pro and the Ti4400.

thanks ^dan

The 9500 Pro and Ti4400 are so close, it probably really comes down to other factors that will affect the outcome of the tests performed by different people.

You can get a PowerColor 9500 Pro from newegg.com for around $170, as well as a Ti4200 (something like an Abit or MSI, which will also overclock) for around $130. Though one thing to think about is the fact that a Radeon 9500 Pro will slaughter even a Ti4600 with things like AF & AA enabled, and ATi card have better image quality.

if you want to overclock it, you better be willing to Flash your card and potentially turn it to scrap.

The nvidia cards are much friendlier to Overclockers.

A vote for the ATi. It has full support for DX9 and AGP 8x.

Just make sure your motherboard supports AGP 8x, if not the performance differences will not be as great. Also there are no DX9 games out on the market......... yet.

I personally am going to wait for the Geforce FX. It's not too far off. Should arrive at least by early febuary.

And by then, games that actually support DX9 will be out on the market.

I don't think that an FX will fit into his under-200 budget anytime soon.

Hehe... got off topic.

But there will most likely be a budget version released.

Note that the 9500 is just a smaller version of the 9700, but not a crippled version like the MX line of VCs.

My motherboard does support AGP 8x(Asus P4S8X). As of now I dont think I will be overclocking it so thats not really an issue. Not having dx9 support really makes me look to the 9500pro even more, because i dont want to have to go out and buy a new video card when the dx9 games come out. whats a good name to buy a 9500pro from?

thanks ^dan

Actually, I would think they would considerably drop the price of the Geforce 4 Ti series enough that it would steal away buyers of the 9000, and possibly even 9500s.

Haven't heard any speculation of an actual budget version of the card. If anything they'll repackage the Geforce 4 Ti's as Geforce FX MX, but I doubt anyone would buy into that name. By then speculation of the new ATI cards will probably be in full-effect, but I have faith in nVidia, and I think they will be top dogs once again next year.

I heard that the budget FX will not have the cooling that takes a PCI slot

As far as I know the budget version will take only one, not the two that the full-blown FX will supposedly take.

yes I like ATI for that, the 9500 is actually better than the 8500 where as a geforce 4 mx doesnt come close to a geforce 3 ti

I've heard good things about Powercolor. HAL9000 has mentioned he had used lots of them for builds and they perform very well.

There's not going to be a huge fan on the cheaper model, I wouldn't exactly call it the budget model though. Still should be around $300.

Hey, Just out of curiosity. Why the 64mb card and not the 128mb card?
