Best O/S for gaming?
Be it old MS-DOS games or Quake III, which O/S do you think is best to use?

You can't beat the stability of Windows XP. While Windows 2000 may be slightly more efficient, XP has a lot of nice features that help the home user. Forget Windows 98SE and ME, they are old and instable compared to XP. And of course Linux doesn't have nearly as many games ported for it as Windows.
Oh, didnt see the old MS-DOS part. Sometimes these wont' run, which is really too bad. Some great games were made for DOS, but again, I'd rather have the stability of XP than old DOS games.

XP all the way. And with a little tweaking those oldies can run in Billy Gates' brave new OS.
IMO dual boot is just a waste of time and space.

I would say windows 2000, Only because I have it . But for MSDOS games, full msdos mode is the best.

Having used Win98 and XP for gaming, the best results seemed to have come from XP. It has been more stable for me and has resulted in fewer crashes which has made me a happy camper.

Xp was written to enhance the performance of games. The driver model used in xp is 3 to 10% faster than the one in 2k. That is what I am told. Plus, it is more accomodating of games and hardware meant to be used in game. Not to mention the ata100 support that is native to xp, I think 2k sans the service packs nets one ata33/66 only, or thereabouts. If you set the desktop in xp to be like 2k you can see performance benefits in sysmark type benches. Sometimes up to 10%.
What would be sweet is if you could run the xbox os. It would run on my nforce mobo I bet. Just dunno how to pull it off with networking and so on. Man I bet it would be fast. The xbox uses a p3 733 and 64megs of ddr with a gf3 class video. Mine uses a xp1800, 512 of dual channel ddr, a gf4ti, and 40gigs of ata100. Gotta be a way.......................... |

I think 2k was slower because it was meant for business networking and such huh?

TomsHardware did an article comparing OS's for gamingI think XP is best for gaming.
Is Win9x better for low-end PCs? because it comsumes less system memory than WinXp/2k. I think XBox "OS" is integrated in a chip.therefore not transferable. |

That's because XP is a total 32-bit protected mode OS; it doesn't include any 16-bit DOS, unless you count a NTVDM.

I have older games that I like to play once in a while, plus some newer ones. I've found the best way to go is to run a dual boot with W9x and XP (I run Pro). Only game I have problems running in ME is XCOM (If you have never played that game you are either too young or just don't know). It's an older DOS based game, turned based, and just runs too fast with the processor I have. Anyone have a 450MHz system they want to sell me for $50?? I've found that Battlefield 1942 runs much better in XP compared to an W9x OS. |
