unreal tournament stopped working!
Ive been playing ut on my comp for over half a year, then i stopped and when i started to play again it stopped working. I have been changing my comps parts but the only new things i added were a monitor and a cdrom drive. Every time i run ut now, it shows the UT logo (loading thing) then instead of booting up the game i get a critical error message with a bunch of munbojumbo. I tried formatting my comp and using a diff OS but no help there. I reinstalled drivers for my sound video and monitor but nothing. I switched my video card with a card that always ran ut and it didn't work. I switched my monitor with one that used to play ut. I cant think of anything else besides my hdd being dumb because warcraft iii works fine. Any suggestions?

What shape is the game cd in? Any scratches or splotches on it?
Any warping evident when you examine it? |

the cd is great, i use the latest patch, i isntalled it on my older computer and it works. It has to be something with my hardware that isn't working. Could it be the hard drive? On sunday my friend is letting me borrow his hd, ill put that in, format it, install ut, and see if it works. Its not my monitor, or my vid card, only possible thing would be the hard drive or my cd rom drives, or a scratch on the mobo? What you need to know is that one day it worked and i palyed, then the next it stopped working.

Go to your drive maker's website and download their diagnostic.
Put in on a floppy disk and boot from that disk, you may have to change the boot order in your bios, and run the tests. If there's something wrong with your drive that should show it. If it's still under warranty they'll replace it. HTH |

WARNING: If your drive is already shafted, those disk diagnostic programs can destroy all of the data on your hard drive by running it through vigorous tests.
Obviously you want to run the diagnostic program, to check that your hard drive isn't already broken. But you might want to backup all of your important data first as you could lose it all (I did once) Jim |

That hasn't happened to me yet but I'll take it as a warning.

Yeah it's happened to me Pam, I had this old Samsung drive. It had some bad sectors so I thought I'd try the diagnostic to see if it would 'fix' them (I was less knowledgable in those days
)Needless to say, it didn't. And I turned on the PC to see something like GJFDISGJDSnuv29] uv3#ui5349066t jo dfjzvod;\fj:RJG aosepi,ejr90 msejh9t0m uy36tW£$JTSIDRTOPdr'fksd.I% "B^YESFO(XPM V UI)^£YU B( GHCIV? ZJKXjor;a'éoTGUJXFOPCmu5ydjC ODF:jk,b ;YU$%V dmf9pdn89pvgf (artist's impression) instead of Windows. Jim Last edited by fatboyjim; 01-03-2003 at 05:55 PM. |

No, you cannot run the program from Windows.
Tell us which OS you're using and we can tell you exactly how to make a bootable floppy disk for it. If you need help with getting into your bios and changing the boot order we can tell you how to do that as well. Last edited by pam123; 01-03-2003 at 08:20 PM. |

The floppy disk must be bootable.
You can download one for XP here:http://www.bootdisk.com/ The download from Samsung goes on the bootable disk. Put it in the floppy drive and the computer will boot from the disk on startup. Follow the rest of the directions from Samsung about what to type at the A: prompt and how to run the tests. Only use the low level format if the test indicate that it will repair your drive. It is also called zeroing out the drive and not even the NSA will be able to recover your data. If the drive is defective and you bought it no more than 3 years ago it's still under warranty and Samsung will replace it. If the drive is not defective then something is corrupting your game cd.
