UT & UT2003 with geforce 2 gts
My roommate has a celeron 766 on an abit bx133 mobo, and a geforce 2 gts 32 MB AGP videocard. The video is fine for AVP, Quake 2 & 3, Serious Sam, but refuses to work with UT or the UT2003 demo. UT freezes up at the first intro screen, even when trying safe mode or software render, and 2003 gives this error message:
UT2003 Build UT2003_Build_[2002-09-13_17.31] OS: Windows 98 4.10 (Build: 67766222) CPU: GenuineIntel PentiumPro-class processor @ 771 MHz with 126MB RAM Video: No Video Direct3DCreate8 failed. History: CreateDirect3D <- UD3DRenderDevice::Init <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine It does this no matter how high acceleration settings are set to, and it passes all the tests in dxdiag. I think the video driver version is 4.13.01.3082, which is a newer version than came with the card originally. Thanks for any advice you could give me, meanwhile i'll be looking for newer detonator drivers. |

Perhaps the game doesn't support the card. Have you checked the game's readme file?

Alright, seems UT uses Glide, so DX8 isn't an issue? Is that how it works? I don't know about 2003, since the error message says it uses D3D.

AFAIK Glide is only for 3dFX video cards. You must set OpenGL or DirectX in order to play the game if you don't have a Voodoo VC.

So UT can use either glide or d3d? It passes the tests in dxdiag, but maybe there's some other problem. I just got some new detonator drivers, so I'm gonna put them on the other machine now, then get back on how it goes.

I've only played the first UT and the original Unreal. And in Unreal I had to download a patch because the original version of the game only supported Glide and DX. And since I had an nVidia VC and I'm a Microsoft hater, I decided to install the patch which added support for OpenGL. Tried the game in DX once but it was too dark. Plus OpenGL is more stable and faster than DX, IMHO.

Okay, threw some different detonators on, and software works now. UT has support for opengl, d3d, and glide, but none work. 2003 is still a no go. I might try putting deus ex on, since that uses the UT engine and see how it goes.

Yes, UT can use all 3, d3d, opengl, and glide, and UT2k3 uses opengl. As long as you are gonna get deus ex which uses the UT engine, you should download Army Ops (free game from the army) to see if it works because it uses the UT2k3 engine.

so 2003 uses just opengl? if so why does the error message say d3d?
I think I have a demo of the army game on a magazine disc somewhere. might have to try that out now. downloading would never happen, as i'm on dialup through school (I know, unclean!) took me almost an hour to download the 8 Mb of new detonator drivers. |

Hmm.. I always assumed that UT2k3 used openGL, but I guess I don't really no for sure. I just looked through the settings and I didn't see anything about openGL or D3D.
Ok, I just looked it up and I was wrong. It uses D3D. But you can make it use openGL. Check out this link: http://members.bellatlantic.net/~butchski/opengl.html |

For a gf2 class card, I think 2xxx drivers are best. Give those a shot over the 3xxx and 4xxx.

Army Ops will run terribly on that computer. It has sickeningly high requirements. They obviously spent very little time in optimizing the game, since it doesn't even look that good. I think the minimum are like PIII 800MHz, 32MB video card, 256MB RAM. Recommended is P4 1400MHz, 64MB video card, 512MB RAM. Pretty bad considering Warcraft III's requirements, and it looks a lot better. Although, Blizzard games have a good record of having low requirements. So, I'm not even sure if Army Ops will run without crashing, simply due to the requirements.

Army Ops won't even install on this computer - it's a P3-800 with 512 ram running Win2K and DX 8.1 - but it has a Radeon 7200 32mb SDR *PCI* card. No go.

You can forget about UT 2003 on a 32 MB DDR card. It's supposed to 128 to play well and while you may get some decent play with a 64 MB video card, there's no way with a 32....

I knew 2003 would be quite a stretch, but I hoped his faster ram on the VC would counteract twice as much on mine.
At any rate, UT works in software, so at least I can lay the smack down on my roommate's candy....umm...cane. It'd still be nice to get openGL or d3d to run, but I won't lose sleep over it. Hmmm...just checking the demo requirements, says 128 ram and 16 Mb vram for minimum, geforce 2 is under recommended requirements (32-128 Mb). I believe the demo has reduced textures though, so that might be different than for the full game. |

I got the UT 2003 demo running on two machines,Abit KT7E,Athlon 1333 mhz,Radeon 8500 LE 64 mb,256mb Crucial pc133 and Soyo Dragon+,Athlon xp 1800,256mb pc2100,Radeon 7500 64 mb video.Both machines run the game perfect.Don't think you need a 128 mb card or 512mb ram.
