Dang!
I bought Mafia, a pretty nifty, Czech-made game. Unfortunately, there seem to be sound issues. Some in-game speech (especially with Ralph, the mechanic) just comes out as mumblemumble murmermurmer. What gives, Jack?! I tried looking for patches, but there are none. Any clues, folks?

ralph is supposed to stutter if thats what you mean but i'm sure its not. Only sound prob i've had is it likes to switch my 5.1 to 2.1 when I start so i have to hit ctrl alt del and go into sound under CP and change it back. and that was near impossible till i d/led the windows update... before it'd mess up almost every game if i tried to minimize it or another window would pop up (people iming me on aim...)

Ralph & others
Yeh, it ain't just Ralph. The thing is, he gives the somewhat crucial information just before each level. It's a problem.

this amy sound farfetched but maybe its your cpu. I know when i was on my old althon 900 t-bird the game ran (i had ti 4200 on it too) and it was ok but very bad framerate even on low settings. Maybe its overworking your computer and causing sound problems...

i had mafia running on me li'l duron 800, geforce 2 mx200
with onboard via ac97 sound. it even ran fine at 800x600 (no high graphic settings with this old card of course) i never had any problems with the game sound a good friend on mine tried mafia on his 1100 athlon, creative blaster mx400, (same as geforce 4 mx400 i think) and 'gold plated' audigy and he never got the game running without stuttering, even on lowest settings. if you check out mafia forums theres all sorts of posts about pc's having trouble running this game, maybe you can find some info over there. what os are you guys running? i have win98Se on the pc with mafia.

RIght now there are no patches available, I was just researching something for my boss to whom I gave this as part of the holidays. There are skins and mods, but no patch form the game maker

I gotta say, a 1200 T-bird should be able to run everything but the coming DOOM game. I'll go ahead and check the forums @ mafia...
Also, there is the possibility that I need to update the soundcard drivers (Soundblaster Live! Value)... I am currently running Windows 98SE. I'm thinking of switching to Windows 2000. What do you think of that? Thanks for all the advice, thoughts & speculation. I definitely appreciate it. This is a very good place, this PCMech. |

doom wont run under 1200 mhz?
good thing me dad just bought a new 1800 xp last weekend. my brother in law just put it all together and installed windows 2000. (he built it so he gets to choose the os) personally, i wouldnt install 2000 ( or any newer windows ) even if they payed me 500 bucks for it. i simply hate the entire layout , how it worksn , and so much more( ive done more than enough posts on that topic) . i thinks what os you should choose depends on what youre doing with your pc. my personal pc (duron 800) has win 98 , since i need a windows to run my version of progress (school wouldnt give us the linux version) when i dont need that anymore, im switching defenately to mandrake. i ve got 2 pc's running mandrake 8.2 now, and i can honestly say, man what a relief. no more hangs, everything can be altered , adjusted any possible way you want it to, and its totally free. my buddy's rewritten debian kernel , used as a server for student room. (think 5-6 pple) had 3 months non stop uptime before the first reboot. beat that microsoft. |
