Installation Issues
This seems like the best place for this one, so here we go. And yeah, it's me again. ^_^ Got my graphics card installed and my trojan deleted, but somebody up there doesn't seem to like me.
I haven't been able to install a lot of things. It'll get about half way through, and then the screen will go black, the computer will crash or freeze, or something will happen that will stop the installation. It doesn't do it with everything. I seem to be able to install peripherals, the game Fallout 2, instant messengers, and the like. But heavy duty programs it seems, like Morrowind and Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries, always end up crapping out on me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ^_^ |

Hello WarmMachineME,
What are your System Specs? In Device Manager, do you see any Yellow Exclaimation Marks? Please download a Memory Tester from Docmemory.com to test if your RAM is OK How many programs do you have running in the background when you try to install these games? How are your CPU temps? System Temps? Do you have proper cooling? Do a Full Virus Scan. You can do a free virus scan from www.trendmicro.com Scan for Trojans, download a good Trojan Scanner from downloads.com Scan for Adware, Spyware with Adaware. Download at Adaware.com Post back with the results! |

Oh yeah, how could I forget my specs?
MS-6340M Micro-ATX Mobo 1.1 ghz Duron Processor 512mb RAM GeForce4 MX420 PCI Win ME No exlamation marks. No RAM troubles. No programs in the background at all. Use selective startup in msconfig a lot to keep from even loading background programs at all sometimes. All my temperatures are fine, I'd say. The system was built with the help of a professional, and I haven't tried any overclocking or any tweaks. (System is about 2-3 days old) I darn well better not have any viruses or trojans. I've scanned my system several times with about 6 different programs to make sure it's good and clean. |

Are all of your drivers up to date?
installed the correct Motherboard drivers? What is the brand of your power supply and how much watts does it produce? Do you have DMA enabled with your hard drive/cd-rom? You need to have a Hard drive and a Motherboard that is capable of ATA 100/133, and a CD-ROM capable for UDMA. Are you using ATA 100 Ribbon Cables? Make sure you are using those and not the 40 wire ones. System Lockups and Reboots often lead to Defective RAM and Power Supply. Even though you say the RAM is OK, you should try another stick of RAM and see if the problem still occurs. You have a PCI Video Card. That could be the culprit, as the games are preventing the installation. Do you have any AGP video cards? If so, please try an AGP video card and see if the problem occurs. Good luck! What do you mean with "no ram troubles"?
That you have already tested the ram? What are your temps? Go to the BIOS and check them. Then post back, plz. PS: That VC isn't helping you, IMHO.

But it won't crash games, just make them run slowly. This seems like a case of out-dated drivers to me.

I know the power supply is 250w. As for the brand, I'm probably reading it wrong, but I think it's Allied. And the RAM has been tested at least twice already, once by the professional in the shop, and once by me using the program from the link provided to me earlier. In fact, we initially had some sticks from Crucial that seemed to be causing some sort of error, so we switched to what's in there now.
As for the mobo drivers, I used the CD that came with it. As for everything else, I really can't say I know how to check the rest. (The "professional help" I spoke of earlier handled most of it. I just installed the things I knew about.) |

I'm really starting to wonder...
I got the bright idea to run Morrowind setup and install it incrementally just to see, and I started with the splash screens, just a few .tga files, installation would take seconds. I started it and it did it anyway. First it froze the comp at around 37%, then it got all the way to 95% and the screen went black. Just installing some splash screens wouldn't throw my whole comp because of power issues or something, would it? |

It does sound like heat to me to. Can you check your temperatures in your BIOS and post them? If the system is doing some intense work like installing major files (like Morrowind) the cpu might be heating itself up and the system freezes. That power supply could also be a problem, being an Allied. If your temps are under 50C, try testing the system with a new power supply.

Well, I just tried to install Morrowind after making a change or two in the BIOS, and it worked perfectly. But the changes I made don't make sense...
I'm using a PCI card right now, so just for the heck of it, I reduced the AGP aperture size to its minimum 4m (was 64m) and disabled AGP-4x mode. I'm not sure why that would fix the problem, because I had the VGA initializing set to PCI instead of AGP, so AGP was never in the loop. I'll try installing some more programs and see if I have the same success. |

Ok, so I tried installing the TES construction set that comes with Morrowind. It's a tiny installation, especially compared to Morrowind, and has no major files like that of Morrowind that I can tell, because the major files it would need are in the Morrowind install in the first place.
The first three times it nearly finished, then the screen went black. The fourth time it worked fine. I didn't change anything any time, just did it four times in a row, and the fourth was the charm. As for checking the temps in my BIOS, if there's a way to do it with mine, I don't know what it is. There aren't any options for it. Bah, I hate being a beginner. |

Scratch that. Morrowind's installation "completed" but for some reason or other an important file or two are missing. Guess it was too good to be true.

Here's another update. Not sure exactly what this means, but maybe it shows that it isn't my VC? I pulled out the card and switched the computer back to its on-board video. I tried an installation again, and it did the same thing.

Here's another interesting thing. Just now I was doing a simple copy and paste from a CD. The files were pretty large, averaging about 3mb, and there was a good number of them. In the middle of pasting, the computer did the same thing it does during an installation.
