which card should i get

I'm building my first computer and was wondering which graphics card to purchase,
i've never played a game on a pc but does'nt mean i won't in the future,i want one that will play back dvd's and other media that i download without being jerky and blocky,it also has to be compatable with my board which is a GIGABYTE GA7-VAX with 256mb of 333ddr.
I was looking at the geforce 4 /440mx price bracket,i've seen quite a few of these geforce 4 /440mx but made by differant companys are they all basically the same board.
any info appreciated.

thanks

NEVER buy a VC with the MX suffix. They are crap. Especially if you plan to run games in your PC.

Get the GF4 Ti4200 if you are low on money. Or better, the ATi Radeon 9500 that supports DX 9.

The MX card is a fine general purpose card unless you are a heavy duty gamer.

However, for general use, especially playing DVD's, an ATI card is better in my opinion.

I'm with glc, the MX cards will suffice for light gaming, and if that's the only thing in your price range, then go for it. I put a MSI MX440 in a build, and it will run JKII, MOHAA, and every other game that's out there smoothly at 1024x768.

No DX8 features though. Ouch!
We Should finally be seing these used frequently. If you are really that broke, I think a radeon 8500 would fit the bill nicely. Or a 9000, but nah... do whatever it takes to get the $10 more.
