Think it depends more on your mobo- the Asus mobo I have with a PII 350 will not work with a GF2.

I have a Compaq 0608h mobo, how would I find out if it will work or not? Please dont say Compaq.com, all they want to do is try and sell me another crappy computer.

Make sure your computer meets the requirements of the video card.
The only way to find out is to put it in and see what happens

are you sure? The only way to find out if the card will work on my mobo is to put it in and find out? Seems a little risky does'nt it? Or is there no threat to damaging my card or mobo just by installing it and see if ti works? How will I know if it worked? Will soemthing automatically start or will I just be able to tell when I play my game (WC3)?

found the pc in compaq's web site
http://www29.compaq.com/falco/doc_de...twareVer=11951 looks like you are going to need a pci card for the video card and with 4mb of card right now pretty much anything will help, but...the question becomes, can you live with the machine for now, and instead of upgrading to a video card that will not be all that useful later, instead go for a new pc altogether? You won't be able to take much if anything from this machine for a new build though. try one of these cards on for size http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...roperty&DEPA=0 |

With mine- the card is a hercules Prophet G2- 3d games wouldn't work- but would work with the 16mg Riva TNT card I had in it orignally. It won't hurt anything to try a card- but there should be a way to find an answer without trying the card- I think has something to do with the voltage- but I'm not a techie.

Putting a AGP card into PCI slot will definitely damage your card.Check if you got a AGP slot(u know, right?
)Strangely I found out that CPU requirements for Geforce2/3/4 included Pentium2.I'm not so sure but thats the manufacturer's "way of business". |

Yes FantasySoul, I do know the difference between PCI and AGP, PCI slots are the white ones on the back of the computer, where sound cards and modems go, correct? And AGP are the not sure on the color(would it be white too? Anyways, it would be further in on mobo correct? I wish it was easier for me to know if I had an AGP slot but I have a compaq, everyhting must be difficult, bunched up and hard to get too in a campaq

Your motherboard only has PCI and ISA slots - no AGP, sorry.

agp slots are brown, and they are typically between the pci slots and the motherboard's plugs that make their way through to the outside (keyboard mouse etc).
The link I gave you earlier show the mobo and the fittings that it has, as we have mentioned, you are lacking an AGP slot. Check out the link for Newegg in my earlier post that shows many of the currently available pci cards. |

Also PCI is considered a BUS and AGP is just a PORT with a higher MHz than PCI but still both of them are 32-bit.
Perhaps you can call your motherboard manufacterer or the manufacterer of your video card and ask them if this will work with what you got. |

thanks for all your help guys, I will be sure to call them...by the way, one more question if you dont mind, is it possible for some video cards to go into PCI slots? I dont think I need a REALLY stong one, I would think maybe an 8mb would do fine, is it possible

There are definetly PCI video cards. The most powerful is the GeForce 4 Mx line but those are a bit much for your system. You'll need at least 16megs to play Warcraft3. Heres a link to a nice card at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...operty&DEPA=1. The EVGA TNT2 32M 032-P1-NV09-S1 RETAIL BOX will work fine if you have a low budget. A better card would be the ATI RADEON 7000 64MB PCI RETAIL , further down that page, if your willing to pay a bit more. Either one will play WC3 just fine.
