Angry Fire Playstation 2 problems

I am now on my 3rd Playstation 2 in a week.

I wasn't sure what happened the first time, the kids were playing it and the controller just went out. Returned that unit. The next unit's CD tray was grinding as it ejected and jerked as it went back in. Returned that one. Tonight, I sat down and played a game for about 10 minutes. I stood up from my chair and got shocked by the controller. Now the controller is shot again.

I am about fed up with this piece of *&%@. What in the world is wrong with these units. I am seriously considering switching to the XBox.

Has anyone else had problems with the Playstation 2?

Are these PS2's brand new or used? I've got a release day PS2 that's never given me any problems with anything even with pretty heavy use.

Brand new. Are they that susceptable to static electricity that it would burn out the controller. All I did was sit down in my chair and then after 10 minutes stood up. I happened to touch the R1 button and it shocked me.

I was reading somewhere else that you need to have one of the stands for the Playstation 2 or there will be problems with static electricity. Is this true?

Not that I know of; I have had a PS2 for about two years(I think), and I have to stand it upright to get it to read some discs. I don't use the stand, and I've never been shocked.

I've had a PS2 for about 2 years now. Never really had any problems with any discs as long as their clean. I keep it in the vertical position and don't use the stand. Where are you buying your PS2 from Hot Rod maybe you should buy one form somewhere else.

Not such a unique problem... My friend had a similar probelm, it seemed he was cursed with bad systems, I too have one, and have had no problems at all. With him the first one he had was actually a defective one, he hit the eject button to open the tray, and the whole drive just came out with it, it was hanging by wires. He took it back... the second one seemed to have something wrong with the disc lens or something, cause it was terrible at reading games, it would be choppy, sometimes wouldnt read, and would just restart for no reason, after the second one he had had enough though, he wrote a less than formal letter to Sony's PR department or something, and they at first said it was not their responsibility, but then when he made a big deal about it with the store, and they told him to go to sony...He really got pissed, called like 20 ppl at sony, I mean he was PISSED, lol, was funny though, anyway, he made a big enough deal about it though, that they sent him a system(he still payed for it of course) but this one came with 2 free games(Tekken tag and some military game, it sucked, but tekken was good), and some pretty little letter from the head of PR department, the whole "sorry to inconvienence you, and we thank you for being a loyal sony customer" that whole thing, and he has had no problems since, 2 free games out of the deal so maybe you should make a few phone calls

and as for switching to Xbox. My brother has one, I have the PS2, the game is visually amazing, but it lacks on good game titles, though they are starting to step it up a noch, time splitters2 is good, halo is still a fun game but old, and I hear splinter cell isnt bad...but for me, I love my Metal Gear2, Devil May Cry 1 and 2...2 is the fu***** bomb, I think they are just now beginning to take advantage of the PS2's very powerful engine, but anyway, I would stick with PS2, Im sure this is just a fluke and you should get a working system next, but its just my opinion

GL to you, hope you get a good sytem

Well....the last unit we got lasted through the weekend and so far....I'm crossing my fingers and knocking on wood...it appears to be working now.

We also took several other steps. We got a humidifier for the room, a horizontal stand for the unit. Put it in a place with better ventilation, and we all make sure to touch something to "discharge" ourselves before we handle the controller.

Hi Hot Rod,

I've had a PS2 for a little over a year now and never had any "shocking" problems like you explained. I did read in PSM magazine though about a similar problem somebody had. Seems they were holding the controller and went to touch the power button on their tv and got shocked by the controller. PSM was guessing it was a bad controller if I remember right (already threw that issue out). Could be something else though, cuz that sounded like they were just guessing and weren't really sure.

It was really weird because I would be playing just fine. I didn't use the R1 button for what I was playing. As I was standing up from my chair to put the controller away, I just happened to touch the R1 button and it gave me a pretty good shock.

Like I said, it's working fine for now....just keeping my fingers crossed. I have so many receipts stapled together right now from returns that I can hardly fit it in my billfold.

I do love the selection of games for the PS2 and love the games that we have so far. EA Sports NCAA football is COOL! I have Madden 2002 for my PC but the next Madden I get will be for the PS2.

Well the first ps2 I had broek but it was because of my personal error. My room being tight packed i had it on a shelf and some things got behind it the exhuast fan got clogged the system overheated and died. But Sony got me a replacement FREE of charge which was nice of them( it was out of warranty as well) in 2 weeks and now since I've treated it well I havent had a problem since with it. I love my ps2! I ahve aroudn 25 games for it...
