Question gateway video problem

ok, so i go over to a friends house to install dsl, and she also asked me to work with her video problems. her brother had done something about two months ago to screw up the video. her only option now was 640 x 480 with 16 colors. so i go to the gateway website, and type in the serial, and get the driver that ti says it needs. it is a nvidia 16 mb agp card, that came with the gateway. i cannot remember the model of the pc, but the os is windows 98. even the nvidia universal driver i downloaded did not work. does anyone have any ideas? thanks for the help

Standard PCI Graphics Adapter = Default Generic Drivers were installed instead of device specific drivers. You need to install the drivers for the video card.

Go into the device manager and open the display adapter and highlight the "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter" and remove it. Restart the computer and see if it finds the drivers that you installed.

The drivers on the Gateway system disk will NOT work with a replacement card unless it's the same card. You must use drivers for the specific card that you are using.

right, it is the card that came with the gateway when they bought it. what i don't understand is why the drivers that say they work with that card don't help it at all. and why would a replacement card with correct drivers not work?
