Also, make sure all your mainboard drivers are up-to-date. What are the rest of your system specs? PSU wattage, etc.

You also should reinstall DirectX after installing or reinstalling a video driver.

Before adding the Nvidia drivers doesn't he need to completely remove the previous drivers like in Win98?

XP and locking up games

Hi newuser

I had (still have!) big problems running games on my newly-built pc. I have a A7N8X mobo with XP2200 (1.8Ghx) cpu.

As long as I'm not running anything more demanding than calculator , then the pc is fine. But playing Combat Flight Simulator and it's a no-go. The joystick goes dead and at other times my headphones zap me!

Are these your symptoms? I too tried reinstalling video drivers but to no effect. I'll be watching this forum for your progress.

ok, to reinstall video drivers, you must completely remove your previous video drivers and replace them with the simple VGA drivers the system came with. You need to only reinstall on top of those. Video drivers are very sensitive and they need these extra steps.

Hmm, I'll try this tonight when I get home.

(So, you're saying that the drivers that come with the card are not worth having? What's the problem with them?)

drivers that come in the box are not current, from a production standpoint of 'produce x disks for the next week/month card production' to 'time in the distribution network till you get it' . The disks are often mainly useful only for a get the machine up and running so I can get to the web and download newer drivers.

Thanks sdkfz

So could using the OEM drivers cause locks ups when running graphics intensive games/applications?

Well, I tried uninstalling the vid drivers but XP seems not to allow it!

An error message flashes up so quick I can't read it, the pc reboots, and b4 I know it, XP has loaded the drivers I originally installed! When I try to force the installation of the updated drivers from Nvidia it just doesn't play.

What now? Remove vid card for inferior one and then try to fool the pc into thinking it has an old card?

Hello all,
First, thank you all for your reply. I did reinstalled OS XP and new updated Nvidia driver. But it still not working right. When playing game the screen is flickering. My mother board is ASUS-CUSL2 and the power supply is 300W. Is any thing that I should do ?

In XP, went to control panel and then system. Then to hardware tab and then device manager. Opened display adapters and selected the driver shown (for GeForce card). Right click and choose properties. Click on driver tab. Choose uninstall.

PC then says to restart machine. When clicking yes to restart (or just restarting later) error message flashes up so quick I cannot read it. The machine restarts, and XP shows that it has found new hardware (the vid card!) and before I know it, I am back with the OEM drivers.

I have a spare HDD with Win98, and when I have uninstalled the driver on that, there is no problem. Of course, I am not trying to put the XP/Win2000 drivers for the Nvidia card on that HDD.

Finally, when I try to get device manager to upgrade the video driver (back on the XP HDD now), the message is that the best drivers are already installed, and I can't do anything else.

What next?

Try just that: restart later, after you install new drivers. In other words do the above procedure, just don't restart. Then load up the new drivers, it should not indicate that best drivers are already installed and hopefully result in a happy ending. Let us know.

Well, I reckon the drivers are installing ok, despite the message that flashes up so quick I can’t read it! J

Um, oh yes, the drivers I have now are version 5.1.2001.0, whereas b4 they were 4.something or other. So I reckon I’ve got the right drivers (up to date, I mean).

This pc is a new build, and although I did once have problems with IE crashing, that’s no longer the case.

Now I can’t load Medal of Honor and cfs stops working. Should I turn my attention to the joystick? It was fine before on another system. I can’t explain why MOHAA won’t load.
