hercules 9700 and ecs mobo will this work?
my current system is a ecs k7vza,duron 800 processor. with a geforce 2 mx200.
265 sdram. according to my bios it's agp 4 compatible. would this be correct. (seems a bit to old for this, maybe?) Now i was thinking about getting a hercules radeon 9700 pro, but since my mobo and processor are getting older, will it work properly, and actually do some proper improvement? i currently have mafia, nolf 2 and cfs3 installed. any ideas would bo very welcome. also how are its drivers with win98? i had some troubles with the latest detonators for my geforce, i even went back to ealier ones thanks in advance

Go here and search for your motherboard :[url]http://www.rage3d.com/board/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=45[/url
If you "Search" the forum the answer you need may already be there. Ignore the people who insist you need to toss everything unless they offer to pay. HTH

It should improve a lot over the gf2mx. When you do get around to upgrading your motherboard and cpu, you shouldn't have to upgrade the gfx card if you get the Radeon 9700 now. I'm not sure about the catalyst drivers (ati) and win98, but I'm sure they should be fine.

There is no official support for Win98 from ATI with the 9700, but I believe the ME drivers do work.

Hmmmmm, I couldn't find your mainboard on the ECS site; are you sure of the model?

Its not a current model, so it's not in the "products" section, but it's in Support.

wow thanks for all the responses,
Renegadeking, my mobo is indeed a bit older, but i dl'ed the manual from ecs's support site yesterday. from the support, like Glc mentioned. my main worry was if everything with voltage controls is ok, since agp 8x slots are different from earlier agp slots, and use different voltage, i heard. my mobo is agp 4 compatible. (its currently enabled in my bios, is this ok with my current gf2mx200?) also in my bios, there are several agp settings, but i dont really understand em all. ill write down the the ones that i dont get and check here first maybe. i read in the forum that pam123 linked to me that onboard audio can give problems with this card, (i have via ac97 onboard audio, but i have a creative pci 128 in an older pc, could try to use that one if needed) So id could give it a try? ive read a few posts where the win98 drivers still worked. how come there's no support for win98 actually? |

ATI is not supporting Win98 on any of their new cards because M$ is not supporting Win98 any more.

darn thats a serious bummer
i downloaded the drivers from zdnet (thanks renegadeking) and i was hoping these would work. zdnet notes that its 'certified' (dont really know the meaning for this word) should i give it a try installing this card in my pc shouldn't i even bother trying? dont want to mess up my pc after spending that much money. i was planning to go buy it early next week, since im pretty busy this week (new roster of class hours kinda blows) Im pretty much noob when it comes to ati vidcards, only know a little about geforces. i was planning to keep my current mobo and OS to about august-september at least. what would you recommend me? |

Well as long as you can return the card if it doesn't work, I would give it a shot. It shouldn't mess anything up. If it doesn't work right then just make sure you uninstall the ATI drivers before you put your old card back in.
About upgrading your motherboard, I would do it when you feel ready. As long as it's working for you now I wouldn't worry too much about it. |
